General Discussion>Pxff.com no more?
elderboy02 06:26 AM 09-11-2014
I just randomly decided to check out puff.com to see how the site looks. It won't even load the site. Did our "old buddy" Jon Caputo decide to shut down his "wonderful" site?

I did a little testing.
The domain is registered until 2015-01-22, so that's not it.
The site server doesn't ping. The server seems to be in Florida.
I tried probing the server with a port scanner and it doesn't respond.
My guess is their server is offline.
Wait...another scan tells me their server is up but just filtering everything. That could be from a router, not the actual server.
Their server address is owned by Affinity, interesting. They own Good Sam and RV.com and a bunch of stuff like that.
Could be a server outage.

A little edit, there are a lot of Affinity named businesses. This one seems to be an advertising and revenue stream one.

I unfortunately found that site first. Got tired of some of the attitudes and heavy handed policies and found you guys. Later learned the back story and if it's gone, no great loss. I do know this is like the 3rd or 4th time in the past few months this has happened. It always took like a week to get an explanation once it came back up and it was something like "a problem with server migration" or so lame excuse. Maybe Jon just needs to pay his damn bills, who knows.

All the videos and blinky stuff and ads probably broke the internet.

So the domain is registered through GoDaddy. The IP is registered to Affinity.

From Affinity's about us page...

Perhaps the ad providers bought the site

Or, maybe the domain registration expired.

Click the History tab

edit: that must have been the last expiration.

BOTL has a thread asking the same question (I'm not a member, I googled it) dated from July. Apparently it's been down for a while.

The IP address is on the same subnet, maybe even the same computer. Caputo Media is the parent company. If it's also down then the whole company is probably down. There is the phone number, if anyone is so inclined as to call. I sent an email.

:-) You are my hero of the day, Steve. Thank you, brother.

I do believe that there may be a thread that details the pre-history of CA in a way that follows the CA rules, but I didn't find it in a quick search. Maybe someone else can find it. I'd hate to see that whole topic get re-opened.
