Kids are havin' a blast Trick 'r Treatin'. I'm hangin' out on the porch drinkin' some awesome coffee, suckin' on a big, fat 58RG unbanded toro maduro I dug out of my tupperdor. Sounds great, right?
I get a phone call 25 minutes ago. My wife is stuck at the rest stop on I-4 in the middle of nowhere 20 miles from home. She called and said the temp. gauge pegged and she had to stop.
Great.
Well, hopefully it is a simple matter of low coolant and not a popped water pump or gasket somewhere.
That's all I need. Our first vacation (EPIC) in forever and we may have to use the EPIC budget to fix her car.
:-)

Maybe something simple like a thermostat?

Got the car home, pressure tested the system, filled it back up. Seems OK. So far, just looks like an old car that just needed some car-Gatorade.
Will wait and see with EPIC-shaped star-filled eyes in anticipation.

Nope. Car's f_cked. From what I can see without tearing the engine apart, I've got at least 2 leaks. One where one of the heater hoses enters the head right below the distributor, the other one I still have to find. F_ckin' water was POORING out the bottom end in the garage.
This aint lookin' good.

Definitely a possibility and I really hope it's something like that.
Then again... Ya oughta be careful what you wish for. Be my luck it's a freeze plug in the middle of the engine, completely inaccessible without taking the motor out.

Good luck!
I just had to replace a freeze plug for nearly the same thing. Fill it up and about 1/2 into a gallon it would start pouring out the back of the engine. Turns out the freeze plug was actually rusted thru! WTF!?
Thanks to Dodges' infinite wisdom, this paticular freeze plug was behind the bell housing for the trans. *sigh*
The trans is still sitting in the bed of the truck (3 months later), and my bro is supposed to come over tomorrow to help me put it back together. What a total pita.

I have a job interview tomorrow (FINGERS CROSSED!!!) and my bro is coming over Sunday to help me find the leak(s).
Whatever happens, happens. I'm a firm believer in that "Everything happens for a reason."
I gave up my will to my higher power a long time ago. If everything works out and i'm able to go to EPIC, great. If it doesn't, I have faith that there was a reason for it.

Turned out to be a simple fix!! 1 busted heater hose.
1 hose @ 9.99
1 gallon of antifreeze @ 12.99
Total cost: $24.61
WE ARE EPIC BOUND, BABY!!!!!!!
