I'm going to be in Austin for a week from 9/9 to 9/15, what's good to do in town? Good restaurants, sight seeing, and, of course, cigar bars or local cigar makers etc... If anyone in town or close wants to get together for a smoke post or shoot me a PM, days should be mostly open as I'm visiting family but they will most likely be working a lot of the time.
Thanks in advance!
Matt

Restaurants, just look online in usual places, anything worth visiting has been put online, as Austin is full of high tech users.
What to do? 6th St of course, kinda like Bourbon St in New Orleans. At a loss for the rest it depends on what you are into.
Cigar places? Habano House downtown or Fumee out in Cedar Park north of town. There is also a Cool River Steak House and Cigar Lounge, which is related to the same name places in Dallas and Denver. Haven't been to the Austin one but the Dallas one is a nice place with a good steak.

A Steak House and Cigar Lounge? That's going on the itinerary for sure. Thanks!

Heroes and Legacies on the north side of town is a great place to get a smoke. If you are up on that area of town for H&L then there is a Texas Land and Cattle just up the road. Steak lunch followed by a great cigar should make for a great afternoon.

You can also get some good fare at Threadgills and sometimes some nice live music.

-Find a Trudys and get a stuffed avocado
-Hey Cupcake - get a cupcake with a whippet (filled with whipped cream)
-Gingerman for a good beer bar. Eat before you go. They have a lot on tap, but the food sucks
-Capitol Building?
Saltlick in driftwood if you have time (BYOB there). I think there is better Q in TX, but this one gets all the publicity.
- +1 on Heroes & Legacies

If you are going to bother leaving the Austin city limits for BBQ you might as well do it right and go to Lockhart instead. Then pick 1, 2 or all 3 of the headliners in town that really know their BBQ.

Lockhart is a definite must visit. I can't wait to visit again.
Trudys - love the breakfast buffet, and the mexican martinis (not necessarily in the same trip).

And I agree. However, when folks come visit me, they always want to go to saltlick because it has been on every show on FoodTV. My favorite is City Market in Luling. The sausage is out of this world. Kreuz in Lockhart is a very close 2nd.

Saltlick is our family's event restaurant and a must go to every time I am in Austin. Do you like Coopers in Llano more than Saltlick? I haven't had better BBQ around Austin than Saltlick.
The Whole Foods downtown and the State House are both worth checking out. The history of Texas interactive show is quite thrill.

It is some of the best in Austin. The problem for me is that it is far from consistent. Sometimes it is very good. Sometimes it is horrible. Same thing for the Rudys chain. Bill Miller is always terrible. I've only been to Coopers once. Do not remember much about it. If your family is willing to go to Llano, they should go the same distance in the opposite direction and end up in Lockhart or Luling.

Llano is a scenic drive more than wanting Coopers (which GW Bush is a fan of I heard), what places do you recommend in Lockhart or Luling?

Yep. Llano drive is nice. If your family is the active type, you should hike Enchanted Rock next time.
For Luling/Lockhart-
Kreuz Market (prounouced 'criets')
City Market
Blacks
Smittys

sorry but the saltlick is for tourist.... City Market is great. Lockhart is the official bbq capital of texas per texas state legislature... Blacks has been around for 80yrs and is out of this world, Kreuz is alright, but Smitty's and Blacks are just awesome, if you can't get out of Austin there is a place in the hood called Sam's BBQ, texas monthly named it number 3 joint out of 50, this is where Stevie Ray Vaughn used to eat bbq, it is on 12th street in east Austin. Hero's and Legacies is great, however I would go to Perry's Steakhouse for a Steak. And if your not wife is not going, then the Landing STrip is always a good time to see some titty's. and if you want to drive to taylor texas Louie Muellers is some of the best bbq you will ever have in your life, get the beef rib and the brisket... and 6th street is a must for music downtown....
