All Cigar Discussion>A. Fuente Don Carlos - Have I Gone Mad?
Nathan King 01:37 PM 02-17-2011
After sampling several of both lines I think I prefer the Don Carlos to Opus X. Have I gone crazy, or do some of you agree? :-)

Yeah, you're absolutely nucking futs fer sure. How could you DARE not worship the cigar altar that is the Opus X?

It's in the cigar commandments, page 146, paragraph 3, sentence 2:
"Thou shalt have no cigar that comes before the Opus X"

BURN THE HERETIC!

BURN!

Ha I am with you, not a big fan of Opus, I prefer the DC as well.

I have never had either, but I am a fan of the AF Short Story...

Smoked my first DC Lancero a couple weeks back and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now if you were to compare it to a 6+ year old X... I think i may lean more towards the Opus. :-)

I'll take a fresh DC over a fresh Opus any day. Like HK3 said, a crusty Opus is a different story. :-)

Don't feel bad, I love the King B's!

I'd love to get a DC lancero. Had a few puffs off of one and was by far the best Dominican I've had.

For me, an Opus needs to sit for at least a few years to mellow out and let some of the flavors come forward. They're a meaty smoke when young.

The DC, on the other hand, only needs enough time to get acclimated to my humidor.

In truth, it's been a while since I've had either. Maybe I need to remedy that. :-)

The Don Carlos Senior I tried from Moki remains one of the best cigars I have ever smoked.

Although I'll probably not get another anytime soon, I prefer the regular production DC over Opus any day.

Smoke what you like man, that's all that matters.

I concur much like anejo, Don Carlos are meant to be smoked in the short term.

imo

I disagree. I have some 4-5 year old Anejo's and DC's that are mouth watering. They get much better with age than Opus, imo. And to beat it all, I am not a fan of Fuente in general.

I like them both, but the Don Carlos line just always leaves me wanting a tad more intensity. If price was not a factor, I'd take an Opus any day.

Personally I think people are a little hard on the Opus X due to the price, scarcity, and ridiculous amount of hype that has been placed on them.

If you like subtle, smooth pepper and all around finesse without much complexity, Don Carlos is for you.
If you have no taste buds at all and just want to spend a lot of money on your smokes, Opus is the one.

:-)

Who am I kidding, I haven't had either one in almost 15 years, but OPUS is not so hot fresh,
and I never bothered to stick around long enough to age one. Give me a fine havana anyday.
CONSISTENCY? Take the Fuente everytime.

Actually the Opus are all aged 5 years before shipping, so fresh off the truck has more age than most. I'm a fan of Habanos as well, just not a fan of tossing every other cigar I light because it's plugged.
