My wife has a Compaq laptop, less than a year old, that up to this point has been working fine. She just attempted to get back on and the screen is black. Any clues as to what caused it and if there's a simple fix?

Have you attempted a hard reboot. My laptop use to freeze when it went into suspend mode. Hold the power button down for 10 seconds and release it. Then turn it back on.

Hold down 10 seconds from the on mode or the off mode?

No luck so far. Mama's missing her Frontierville.

Holding it for 10 seconds should shut down the computer. then try turning it back on and "run windows normally"

Holding the button down from the on position, it shuts down after about 3 seconds. Do I continue holding it down for the full 10 seconds, then turning it back on? Sorry for being such a dweeb.

Once it turns off, give it a few seconds and then turn it back on normally. What happens?

Still dark. Powers up, wi-fi lights up, but no picture (or start-up sounds).
Tried the brightness controls and the like, but still no luck.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like a trip to the computer guru may be in Cid's future.

If it's less than a year old, isn't it sill covered under a manufacturer's warranty?

On my daughters laptop about a week after the warranty went out, this happened to her. Turned out it was the processor and it was cheaper to buy a new one then to have it repaired. I wish you better luck then this.

I hear you, Mario and thanks. Had the monitor replaced on mine by the same guru I mentioned earlier last year. Had I added another hundred or so to the bill, I'd have had a new laptop.

I told the wife it must be all the negative energy she gives off.

Honestly if you can find a screen on ebay for $85 bucks or so they aren't hard to change. Just buy a new screen and swap it out. You'll save quite a bit of money.

I've got a suspicion it's not the monitor. No picture, no start up sounds, no key stroke control. The further I look and play, the more I think it could be the processor. Bummer.
