My friend lives in Canada and was just gifted a Cohiba. I have attached a pic. Can you tell me if it appears to be authentic? Any ideas as to how old it is? What the value is?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

What is the length? RG? The 2004 Cohiba EL was a Sublime. What size is this one? Do you have a pic of the entire cigar?

Etc etc, more questions than answers :-)

Oh... and my guess on age would be 2004 :-) lol

2004 Sublime should measure 54x164

The script, especially on Cuba, seems off.

It looks like a genuine post-June '03 to me. Many of the fakes only have two rows of squares above the word "Cohiba." The brand name is gold with the raised lettering.

The genuine band:

Nope its a fake. You can tell because the flower arrangement isn't centered on the pillow. That is a cheap knockoff that is actually dangerous because they have been know to spontaneously combust when you put your head on the pillow. It also has melamine. No idea about the other object with the weird label.

One, is it triple capped? Two, do you have the measurements? Three, can you take more pictures of the band?

Provenance would help, as in where did the gifter get it from? A friend that has a cousin in Cuba, or a well established B&M in Canada? And is the original gifter a well versed cigar enthusiast that can afford to routinely gift out cigars worth $100+. The C in Cuba has a curly-q that breaks the bottom of the C, a big tip off toward it being a counterfeit, and the EL band looks a little funky. The cap looks pretty rounded and poorly constructed. Keep in mind the Cohiba DC 2004 EL is one of the MOST commonly counterfeited Cuban cigars. If the provenance were good on this I would chalk those inconsitencies off to it being from Cuba and sh!t happens, but unless you KNOW that it came from somebody who has a lot of experience with high end CCs I wouldn't get your hopes up.

That is the only pic I have but he did say it has a double cap not triple. Is that a dead give away that it is fake?

If you look closely at the "C" in Cuba, it tells it all.

From what I heard/read double cap is one way of knowing whether it is fake. :-)

Another reason why purchasing cuban cigars can be so stressful. :-)

Honestly I personally cannot tell and be 100% confident from just that 1 picture.
