General Discussion>Craig's list - ATVs
RevSmoke 07:12 AM 09-14-2010
I don't e-bay and I don't Craig's list, so this is all new to me.

There is a sale that I found in which I am interested which was listed as location - Wausau (about an hour from me).

I e-mailed the seller about my interest, and the idea of purchasing the items. But then I get this note from him.

>>>I want to close this deal through eBay International Trading. They will keep the amount paid until you'll receive, inspect and agree with the ATV's. I'll start the delivery process in the same day with the payment's confirmation. They will arrive at your address in 3-5 days. I will give you 3 days for inspection.

Tell me if you are still interested and I will contact eBay regarding our transaction. Then they will send you the information about the purchasing.

Thanks<<<

Now, the deal is for two ATVs and a trailer for $5000. Each of this model year ATVs normally sells used for anywhere from $4000 - $6000 used.

For some reason, this sounds too fishy for me. Am I right to be skeptical?

I don't know anything about this, but....

Peace of the Lord be with you.

Craiglist is FULL of scams.

The English in their message sounds typical of a non-native speaker. It is probably someone from Jamaica or Nigeria. 99% of our internet scam reports we take come from those two places. You did not specify if this was on Ebay or Craigs list. The seller wants to use ebay to pay for it, but on ebay you don't email the seller which is what you said you did. So it sounds like this is craigs list. You should withdrawl your bid (assuming this is on Ebay) and cease all communication with the seller. You will need to report the listing to Ebay in order to withdrawl your bid.

Rev, it's almost certainly a scam.

If you think of craigslist as a newspaper, you'll be ok; you find the listing you want, you contact the seller, the two of you meet up, you look at the item, you pay right there.

Steer clear of anyone offering to ship you something or, if you are selling, anyone who offers to send send you a check/MO and arrange for transportation of the item.

Please read these pages for more info and suggestions on how to avoid being scammed and how to "stay safe":

I've bought a few things on Craigslist, but it's always been an in-person inspection, and payment of cash on the spot. I'd avoid this one.

There's a very similar situation described in today's Minneapolis Star Tribune. Fraud.

Yeah, I'd say eff that. Ask them to meet in person to inspect. They won't.

:-) I read that earlier today and was going to post it myself.

If you can't inspect the items in person, pay in person, and take possession immediately, I'd say NO WAY!

Definitely a scam :-) I would never use a online payment system for anything on Craigslist. Like others said you meet up, inspect and pay them face to face.

I buy and sell a lot through ******, Ebay, and Craigslist and this is no doubt a scam. Keep the transaction face to face for peace of mind.
