All Cigar Discussion>What should I know?
dc1994 12:32 AM 06-28-2010
Hey everybody. I'm brand new to CA and cigars themselves. My friend and I were in a tobacco store. We were just picking up some cigarettes but I decided to check out the humidor. I walked in, and it had a very nice aroma. All the different types was amazing. I wanted to try them all, but I only had a few bucks on me, so I bought a Hookah Tahitian Vanilla by Drew Estate. I really didn't know who he was, but it looked pretty fancy so I bought it. But I haven't smoked it yet. I really don't know what to look for in a good cigar. You guys want to fill me in?

Until now, the only cigars I have ever smoked were the cheap ones at the gas station. So again I know nothing about cigars, but would like to learn.

Welcome to the board!

Go back into that tobacco store and tell them the same thing that you said here and they will ask you this, are you looking for mild, medium, or strong cigars? How long will you smoke the cigar? etc.

The only way to know what you like is to experiment. And that experiment will take years, but it will be a fun ride.

Do you have an old (big) Igloo cooler? :-)

I'm with South Shield on this, go back to the B&M and let them advice you. Oh, and get a humidor (or cooler) that is three times the size you think you will need.

Hey brother, welcome to Cigar Asylum :-) I think the other guys are saying the right thing that you should go back into the B&M, ask for advice and smoke a wide selection so you find out what you like.

As a general rule, the lighter the wrapper, the milder the cigar. But, dark cigars can be very tasty with some sweet flavors so don't stay away from those thinking they are all powerhouse cigars. Some of the dark maduros can actually give you a good chocolate/sweet flavor profile without buying the flavor infused cigars like Acid. If you really want specific ideas, here are a few I would recommend to new smokers that are looking for a good quality cigar without the high prices...

- Oliva cigars are a good basic cigar at cheaper prices and I feel is a good brand to try starting out.
- Arturo Fuente cigars are a good consistent higher quality cigar and something you might want to try is the Short Story... it's a smaller smoke and won't break the bank.
- The Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne cigar is popular by a lot of people that like mild cigars. Not sure if that would be a standard cigar in most B&M's though...

I could go on and on... taste preference is really subjective and you just need to start smoking and figure out what you like, not what other people tell you is good. Keep reading the forum, try different cigars and you will eventually know what to look for and what the differences are in cigars. Eventually, you will know what flavor a specific tobacco (Criollo, Oscuro, etc) brings to a cigar when you see it listed...

For storing the hundreds and hundreds of cigars that you'll soon be getting your hands on. They call it a slope for a reason:-) Acids are very "flavourful" cigars. Most here don't like them but give a few different ones a try to test what fits your tastes.

The cooler with humidity beads is a cheap way to properly store loads of smokes without breaking the bank.

Thanks for all the replys guys.

I'm not really looking for flavored cigars. But that Hookah I picked up did smell pretty good. I haven't tried it yet, but will tomorrow morning.

I looked it up, and found out it is a double claro. I'm not really sure what that means, but figured you guys might.

Welcome! A good way to get started is to participate in the Newbie Sampler Trade. Also, take some time to read the threads and stickies. You can find a lot of threads about good cigars for beginners :-)

Welcome to Cigar Asylum! Some decent advice given above.

I would add:
-Higher price doesnt equate to a better smoke
-Try as many different marcas (brands) and vitolas (shapes/sizes) that you can
-Dont be put-off from cigars if you dont like that Drew Estate. They specialize in flavor infused cigars that many smokers find offensive.
-Dont be afraid of Maduros (the dark wrappers). The dark wrappers are more sweet than strong.
-Most of all, enjoy your smoking time. Cigar smoking is meant to be pleasurable and relaxing.

I'm not sure how you could have confirmed your registraion if your email address was incorrect.

In the future, if you have any forum issues or questions, post in the Issues/Suggestions forum. Lots of helpful people here. Or you could PM any of the Admins - our user names are red.
