Acu-Rite 00613 Digital Hygrometer
Price: $7-9 at Wal-Mart
Image
I found this hygrometer near the paints, glues, sealants, etc. I guess they vary from Wal-Mart to Wal-Mart. Just ask a clerk where the thermometers are and (if they speak English
:-)) they'll point you towards the right direction.
The hygrometer looks very attractive compared to the other ones you usually find at Wal-Mart for the same price. It requires a 1 AA battery (not included) to operate. It has a magnetic strip on the back of the pager-like clip to attach it to metal surfaces. It also has a pin designed to turn the clip into a stand. It has a button on the back to change the Temp reading from F to C. Do you basic salt test and you should be good to go.

After salt test (48 hours).

Verdict:
I've had it for over a year now and it's still doing good. Overall, a nice digital hygrometer for the price. + It's cheap and you can find it locally.

I have 3 of them they are wonderful for the humi or any other temp/rh area you want to monitor. One of mine is a couple of years old and still works great. They are usually pretty accurate right out of the of the box too but good idea to verify. Great Value and nice to be able to just walk in a store and buy them without waiting even if you do have to go to Walmart. Here they are on the back wall of the store in the tool section.

From web:
Displays indoor humidity and temperature
Displays Lo / OK / Hi comfort level icon
Keeps track of daily high/low temperature and humidity
Uses 1 AA (1.5V) alkaline battery (not included)
Main unit dimensions: 3" X 2 1/2" X 1 1/4" inches
Includes magnetic back for easy mounting to metal surfaces
Includes tilt stand for easy display on tables and desks
Also after you salt test it if its way off, some will be, take it back and get a new one. Explain that you tested it and it is off. If you do it within a few weeks of buying it they should exchange it. I have a bunch of them and have taken 2 back and they exchanged them no problem.

TEST EVERY ONE you buy! I had four, one was 5 degrees off, one was 12. The other two worked fine.

They are great looking, nice features and cheap. Mine is 3% low which I don't like though... I wish they were adjustable. I guess that's what you get for under $10 though.

I just picked one up today, too. Can't wait to try it out. My local Wal-Mart had them for $12.00, was wondering if anyone else had to pay this much too. Still a good deal, though.(I guess)

A lot of times, stuff like this has a trim-pot(s) inside on the PCB that you can tweak to adjust the humidity (and/or temprature).

Now that would have been awesome, but just took one apart and showed it to the wife, a supervisor in a PCB factory and it does not have one. If it does its been potted, a glob in the middle of the board. But she thinks that may not be it either.

They were just under $8 at my Walmart about a month ago.
They will refund/exchange with no problem if you take them back in new condition and tell them they were not working properly out of the box has been my experience.

My apologies... I actually grabbed the wrong one. The one I have came with a stupid 10' probe; just something else to get in the way. I will have to go back to Wal-Mart when they get some more of the other ones in.

EDIT: Actually, I think I may keep this one to use outside the humi, to compare with the one I will put inside it.

That's what I have in my humi!! Got the recommendation from this site actually while I was lurking! Works great and can't beat the price.
