While working in the shop today the wife comes in and flicks the lights, my cue someone wants my attention. I turn off the sander and I see "That Look", and nothing good is about to happen
:-) She proceeds to tell me the 10+ year old dryer has finally died and she has a wet load in it and a wet load in the washer. So upstairs I go to Google electric dryers. WTF happened to the price. I know it was over 10 years ago I bought one, but the average going price was well over $600 and many were hovering around a grand.
Off to Lowe's I went and bought the off brand dryer made by Whirlpool, says so right in the manual
:-) for $300 including tax and out the door.
4 hours later I was back sanding and the wife was doing laundry again, another crisis resolved
:-)

My wife hates me because I just fix everything. I can keep a dryer working forever. We never get anything new.

I think we paid $200 for the old one, new.
We figured it is going on 12 years, 11 for sure.
5 kids worth of laundry over those years and I think we got our moneys worth

Working on it just means delaying buying a new one and being twice as pissed-off when I do.

We got one free from Sears. It took some hoop jumping but we got it and a free service contract too

Craigslist is pretty helpful with this. Also, you can put the old clunker on there and hopefully have someone haul it away from you.

You got off easier than me.
My washer broke so she needed a new one.
Decided she had to have a front loading one, with the darn additional pedestal, with the stainless inside.
You don't want to know how much.
But that is not where it ends. She then tells me while at the store that she cannot have them mismatch. So..........a front loading dryer to replace the one I had, which worked just fine, and of course, add the pedestal also.
It was quite a trip that is still being paid on "same as cash".
So I am jealous of you!!!

My parents have an old Maytag dryer that's approaching 23 years old. Looks like hell, but it still works.

I was kind of in the same situation.
We bought matching front loaders. Not the pedestal.
After a few weeks I went back and got the pedestal. Way too low without one. Plus it gave a good place for storage.
They shhlould come with pedestals already.

luckily, our laundry room has a sloped ceiling that precludes use of a pedestal
:-)
that said, i am pretty impressed with our pricey washer/dryer set. all i know is it holds a ton, it talks to my wife when she turns it on (well, not literally), and things come out clean and dry.
