General Discussion>I made the iPhone leap, and I need some help.
shilala 08:24 AM 08-14-2009
Yesterday I got an iPhone. The 32gb 3GS. I am TOTALLY stoked. :-)
Now, here's my problem...
I have a 32gb Touch and I'd like to transfer all my stuff from the touch to the iphone. Any clue?
I figure the apps will just go from itunes to my new phone, but what about all my music and stuff?

The main thing is I will never have to speak to Verizon Wireless again, which in itself is sheer bliss. :-)
Plus I can get rid of my touch and all the rest of my ipods and my gps and my old phone. It'll really unfill my pockets.

Here's my new baby...

Back up your itouch via iTunes

What Vin said.

Or you can just sync your iTouch with iTunes, and then sync your iPhone with iTunes.
(make sure the box is checked to sync all music)

The only issue would be if you have music on your touch that is NOT in your itunes library. You would need a third party application to move the music (or videos, or whatever) off of the touch back onto your computer.

I checked every button on itunes and can't find out how to create a backup.
K, found the backup button.
I backed it up.
Mow I'll try to hook up my iphone and see what happens. :-)

It's now restoring from a backup of my ipod touch.
I hope it works. :-)
It'd be awesome if all 28 gigs of crap transferred and I don't have to reload all the video and playlists and stuff.

Through iTunes your iPhone will ask you what applications, music, videos, etc. you want downloaded just like any iPod or iTouch does. Really no different.

Also an application I really like an suggest to everyone is "around me." It can find pretty much anything near you wherever you are. It's free to boot.

So far it erased my contacts and pics and messages from yesterday, but that really amounts to nothing. So far so good.
It's slower than cold molasses though.

usb2. I don't have a firewire cable for it. Not even sure I have firewire on my mobo because I've never had a device that I used it with.

I figured out what was taking so long. It was downloading the newest software version while it was trying to the backup.
Now I gotta start all over, I think. Ugh.
I'm gonna go mow the grass while it tries to sort itself out. :-)

If you have a firewire plug on the computer, you might consider getting a firewire cable, it will be much faster. That said, just syncing a few songs might be tolerable over usb - the initial sync is the one where firewire would really make a difference.

i thought that apple has gone exclusively to usb 2.0 for ipod and iphones, a firewire cable will only charge an iPhone

I got my apps all moved over, and I'm trying to restore my music from backup.
I imagine that'll screw everything up I just did.

yeah I just looked it up and from what I have seen, the firewire will charge it but not sync, so at least you have an extra cord to charge with

oh and shilala, congrats on the iphone, I have had the original and the 3g, unfortunately I have to wait until Jan 10 to get the good upgrade price for the 3GS. I love this phone and couldn't imagine wanting any other phone, I hope you have a similar experience
