General Discussion>Shaving Facial Hair

Dunno why I didn't think to ask this earlier, years earlier.

How do you go about shaving the remnants of a mustache from the corners of your mouth? I'm using a Gillette Fusion, and I've been baffled since I started at 12 lol.

Gentlemen, I thank you -

I'm into traditional wet shaving. I have a boar's brush (only thing available locally when I needed a brush), good shave cream (using Tayloy of Old Bond rose cream at the moment), and a double-edge "safety" razor with good blades (I've found Japanese Feather blades to work best on my beard).

On an average day, I'll do 2-3 passes: 1 x with the grain and 2 x across the grain

On a pampering day I'll seek a bbs: 1 x with, 1 x across (right to left), 1 x across (left to right), 1 x against, touch-ups as needed

With the right hydration, later, and technique, you'll find all those trouble spots disappear. :-)

As for shave cream, I'm using the rest of my mother's Envi :-), and I do have a handful of Burma-Shave cakes, a brush, and a mug - it just takes too long any more, but I'll get back into it someday.

I don't want to have to buy a new razor. And may I ask what bbs stands for? I figure if I just shave repeatedly, gently, in every direction, I'll get it eventually.

Thanks for the reply -

You've got to go in order -- that's key: with, across, (optional second across,) and against. if you just randomly go at it, you're gonna miss spots, get nicks, get razor burn, etc.

light is right; but stricter technique is key. :-)

pps, badgerandblade.com is awesome

Gillete Fusion razor.
Silver-tip shaving brush.
Pre-shave oil
Art of Shaving shaving cream for sensitive skin.
After shave balm

After a hot shower I apply the oil all over the shaving area. Foam up brush liberally with cream and apply. The shaving brush is almost like a little massage for your face, and the silver tip is so soft that it just feels great and makes the tedious chore of shaving that much more plesant for me.

Shave with the grain with light pressure starting with my sideburns and cheeks.

Neck comes next, again with the grain.

Under the nose is taken care of with the single blade portion of the Fusion, the rest of the moustache area is take care of by the 5blade side

The chin area I leave for last so that the foam has time to soften the stubble that much more.

Any missed spots I dab on some more foam and shave across the grain.

Rinse with warm water, then with cool water to close the pores

Apply after shave balm

I get most of my supplies from the Art of Shaving. I have very sensitve skin on my face and get razor burn very easily, espically on my neck. Yeah, some of the stuff I buy is a little pricey, but I feel its worth it to not have razor burn and ingrown hair.

MACH 3 ALL THE WAY!!! Fusion sucks....

When I last shaved my stash a few years back, I shaved down towards my lips, then at all angles. I sometimes use shaving creme, but not often for those areas on the face. Neck is where I need that.

Whats the problem that you have shaving that area?

If you can't get is smooth, try shaving 1. down, 2.in from the outsides, 3. up from the bottom. This is one of the spots that is notorious for the hair growing in different directions. And shaving in different directions will help catch all of it.

If it seams to be to sensitive and you get razor burn or ingrown hairs, try shaving just down. With the fusion you have 2 things working against you here. The giant head is difficult to fit in tight spots like under the nose so you have to press pretty hard and, the lifting and cutting motion that all the blades are supposed to make can really cause more ingrown hairs.

well, AFTER you go through Puberty, your hair thickness will increase.

For right now, just drink your milk and let your cat drink the milk mustache off...along with your peach fuzz....

Art of Shaving make nice products.

I use their 3 step products too and like them. I also use that blue Kiehls aftershare toner before the AoS lavender balm.

nice badger brush, some Mama Bear's shaving soap (sandalwood vanilla), and my Tiger Straightedge. Slow and steady, and enjoy shaving like a man.

:-)

I started using traditional wet shaving after I got tired of razor burn and pulled hairs. I found the single blade (after I got the technique) easier to get a much cleaner shave. I use a Merkur with both Feather and Swedish Gillette blades. I got my boars hair brush from Art of Shaving. It took a little practice, but now, it's quick and works great.

I didn't realize there were some fans of the badger and blade on the board.
