Walked in to a cigar shop that you have never been in before and tell the employee that you are new to cigars just to see what he/she will show you?
Its pretty fun.
I was told today that the Romeo y Julieta 1875 was the best cigar for the price (churchill for 14.99)

I never thought of that, I'll have to give it a try one of these days. Sounds like fun!
What a devious trouble maker!

Interesting . . . I travel a lot, but will have to find some new shops. They know me too well at the regular haunts.

I would love to do this too but like everyone else my B&M's know me too. It's like going to starbucks and asking for a large.

haha I just dis that last night. Jeannie's was on the way home from the Airport, so i decided to take a gander. Asked him if he had any "Burley Tobacco" and he led me over and talked to me for 20 minutes and described the different forms of pipe tobacco and how they are made.
Then I saw a brand new shipment of Opus... couldn't keep my wallet in my pants. They havn't even raised they prices with SCHIP either.

I've done this before.
never had anybody try to sell me overpriced cigars though. Usually they recommend something pretty appropriate for an inexperienced smoker. I think the last couple times I was offered a Gispert and a Cusano.
:-)
not terrible cigars but not ones I would usually buy either.

Now this is a great Idea I have got to try this out! When I move to a town that has a real B&M. Which will be very soon. In the town I live in now the best I have is a Smoke shop with a very small humidor kind of sad actually I never get to see a stick before I buy it except digitally oh well not for to much longer.

I went to a place where I guy had to lead me into the humidor. He assumed I didn't know anything. He took me straight to the Gurkhas and started giving me the hard sell. He kept standing behind me like I was going to steal something. I never went back.

I do this almost everytime I go to a new B&M.
I don't tell them I'm new, but when they ask what I'm looking for I say, "I like Churchills." And then I see what they do with that.
It is fun.

In my experience there have been a very small percentage of times, out of all my visits to any shop, that I was attended to by someone that had *our* passion for cigars.Which is sad.

I was just at the B&M and this dude was telling me that the Camacho Corojo was a puro because it was all corojo; wrapper, binder and filler...
He also told me the DPG My Father was the cubanest cigar made...

what really makes me sad is when you walk in somewhere and they have the humidity up so high that all the smokes are covered in white fuzz. only seen that a few times but jeez, to see all those lovingly hand rolled cigars ruined by somebody's ignorance.

What's wrong with asking for a large at Starbucks...other than the fact that one is way overpaying for a cup of coffee?

I have done that a couple of times and it was hilarious...everytime they pushed the White Owls..
:-)..just kidding. They really pushed the most expensive gars in the place...and half the time couldn't even tell you anything about them except the price.

I have got a lot of good cigar recommendations on cigars, however the advice i have got for humidor care is terrible. Such as "You can use tap water in these Drymistat Crystal Tubes" Or "Just use bottled water there is no point in buying a gallon of distilled water." This happened at two different B&Ms too. And both times when i was going to leave other people in there smoking say don't listen to him, buy distilled water.

I haven't thought of doing this. However, I do like to ask what is smoking well and I've received some confounded looks because the employee doesn't really smoke cigars. Kinda sad.
