Looking to do a build up. I have a Stag Arms stripped lower. Ordering the buttstock and the LRK today (I'm assuming no prob using a Bushmaster LRK in a Stag Arms lower???).

Now looking to educate myself a bit more on my upper. I want a 5.56, flat top. I'm leaning towards a complete upper to save hassle, but if I can save some money and (more importantly) get the parts in the next 6-7 years, I'd learn to build my own upper.

Any info or any leads you guys may come across would be greatly appreciated.

*I have been browsing often on AR15.com, but won't be able to register for a few weeks (currently only using a hotmail email account, which they won't accept).

The lower parts kits are interchangeable. I would just buy a complete upper.

Also, for AR15.com, I believe if you register for a e-mail at mail.com, you can then register on ARFCOM. Then once you are signed up, you can change it to your hotmail account :-)

Thanks for the tip....now, to just find a complete upper that will be shipped within this lifetime.

Adam, do you want a 1:7 or 1:9 twist barrel?

Nice! Thanks!

Unfortunately, the mail.com thing didn't work on ar15

Perry, not sure what I'd check with the BATF? I've got a good idea of the legalities of the project, if thats what you meant. I'm more concerned with the nuts and bolts of the project and finding any available parts.

Leaning towards a 1:9, most likely chrome.

(unless I'm convinced otherwise. I'm new to ARs)

I usually go with a 1:7 twist. It helps stabilized the heavier grain bullets that you use for self-defense (Hornady TAP) 1:9 is good as well.

Adam, use my e-mail address: elderboy02 at ar15 dot com to register. Once I get the password, I will e-mail it to you and you can change your account. :-)

The mods on AR15 said you can use a friend's email to do this.

I'm screwing with myself enough here! :-)

These ARs sure have a lot more parts than my single shot NEF :-)

One thing I'd suggest just to get one before the eventaul ban is get a 5.7 uppers. They work with any mil-spec lower receiver, I looked around everywhere for almost a month trying to find a .223 upper, and no go. My local gun store had one and I've seen them for sale on the internet, the only downside is the magazines are expensive as hell.

Thanks for the email. I have it copied if you want to take it down for privacy's sake.

This gun will not likely ever see self-defense duty, except for a SHTF situation. Due to the proximity of other houses, I stay with a 12 ga for general defense work.

EDIT: All signed up...thanks again!

Once you get registered, check out the Equipment Exchange. There are always guys selling uppers on there.

Funny that I see this thread. I just decided to join the AR world yesterday and picked up a DPMS stripped lower. I didn't realize how hard uppers were to find until I started looking.

I'm not in a hurry to put an AR together (I have enough other guns), but am worried about future bans. Since I bought the lower during a "non-ban" period, will I be able to build the gun however I want down the road? (obviously w/o an auto sear)

My understanding is that it depends. If its a rebirth of the Clinton ban, you'll still be able to use your pre-ban lower.

If it goes above and beyond that...then who knows. Pocket lint might even become illegal.
