I didn't want to thread jack someone else so here goes.

I just obtained a Colt AR-15 6920LE

I have not fired it yet. I will use it for target shooting. I would like to learn to increase my distance shooting. What are some optics you recommend. I DO NOT want to go cheap. I wouldn't say price is no object, but quality, accuracy, and reliability are very important to me. I have checked out ar15.com but I am a newbie to rifles so some of the talk is over my head. Besides, this is a chance to share your stories and pictures. Who can resist that?

I don't have an optic on mine, so I can't really help out on this. I do however have an EoTech 512 on it and I love it.

I have an Aimpoint clone on mine (money IS an object for me :-)), but it has no magnification. Just a 5 MoA glowing, floating, red dot. If you don't know about "MoA"... simply put, at 100 yards the dot in my aimclone covers a 5 inch diameter area on the target.

If I had some money to blow and something longer than my 16" barrel, I'd go with an Aimpoint ML3(the one with the 2 MoA dot) and an Aimpoint 3x magnifier on a flip-down mount. That way you can use the magnifier for the long shots, then drop it out of the way for the short stuff.

See sheltot's post near the bottom of this page.

Any nice target scope will work. Check out www.riflescopes.com and make sure to click on the "Sample List" link as there are some good deals. If you want to keep it "Tacticool" you can put an ACOG on there which will give you 3.5-4x. If you really want to spend some dough look into a Nightforce scope. Like elderboy I just have a EoTech 551 on mine.

I am considering the Trijicon 3.5x TA11.

The S&B Short Dot looks awesome, but costs twice as much and more than the weapon itself.

I love the look of the Trijicon ACOG's. :-)

If money isn't an object, and you want an AR style optic, trijicon ACOG is the way to go. Aimpoint w/ the magnifier is also GTG. As with cigars each to his own, but I absolutely abhor the eotech's.
[dan'lboone'sopinion]
I have shot 300 meter targets with an AR, I've seen AR's reach out to 500 meters, I've been told by sources I trust about 800 meter shots, and then there was that Cpl from Cullman, Alabama, hit a guy square in the chest with an M4 at 1000 yards. If you want something to "reach out and touch 'em" I wouldn't use an AR. IMHO.
[/dan'lboone'sopinion]

While I'm by no means an incredible shooter, I can say confidently with my aimpoint I can consistently touch 300 meters with an AR. The magnifier on that is more accurate. An ACOG was the absolute bee's knees when I used it in Afghanistan.

I second the ACOG. I sold my AR and my EOtech 512. Wish I never did now. :-)

Just pulled the trigger on the Trijicon. Found it new for $700 and could not resist a steal. If I hate it I figure I can sell it used for the same amount.

if you some reason you dont like it look in to nightforce. I have one of their scopes on my rifle and LOVE IT, it is the 2.5-10X32mm W/ zero stop mil dot recticel and .1mil turrets but they are a little pricy at 1488+ mount.

speaking of mount look in to Larue mounts they are the best.

I think you will enjoy that Trij. Ive looked at them often.. but I usually shoot a little further out than that may allow.

sounds like you picked up a winner. Let me know how it does, as I'm reconsidering my affinity for aimpoint..

:-) You guys get into your ar-15's. I never really thought much of my M4 I use for work. Right now I'm using a aimpoint. Before that was using a ACOG but I felt the aimpoint was better for what I was doing. Most guys depend on optics for shooting but I think shooting techniques are more important.

I just have to say congratulations on the rifle and now the optic.. You have quite a set up going on there that I for one envy.
