just got a pound of beads and sprayed them with distilled water until about 75% of the beads turned opaque. Placed them in the Vino and checked the humidity this am and it was 85%!!!!! I tested the hydrometer using salt and it was 65% on the dot. Any ideas?

Wow that doesn't sound good. I wish I could help you with the bead question, but one thing I did notice was that your hygrometer is off by about 10%. If you salt test it, it should read 75% not 65%. I double checked the "how to calibrate your hygrometer" thread and that is what is in there.

I have never heard of beads being that off before. Can I ask where you got them?

Did you mean that 75% turned clear?
The beads should turn clear when wet. They are opaque when dry.
Not that that helps your problem any.

Could anything else be causing a high humidity? What's the RH in the room?

Sorry yes 75% turned clear. The beads are brand name cigar beads set for 65% As for the salt test I also ment 75% Room humidity is around 40 to 50%

sounds like youve done everything correctly. give it another 24 hours and check it again. If youre really nervous about it you can crack the door on the vino, that will drop the rh quickly.

Another factor to consider is how full is your vino?

You probably need to pull the beads out and dry them some. A hair dryer in low should work. The seal on a vino is so tight I've found that keeping about 50% or even less wet works well.

Thanks everyone....I think I may have over wet them. I am going to dry some out. The vino is a new project and its empty for the next fews days so I can get the Rh correct.
