I have seen some collectible pipes raise large sums... I believe a Bo Nordh nautilus brought twice this amount a few years back iirc. Seems a lot to pay for a (beautiful) pipe, but not so much in terms of a collectible piece of history. I can't imagine having anything of this calibre sitting around in a cabinet... On the one hand it loses value considerably if you smoke it, but it is also a crime if you don't.

Big night last night - couple of Kawoodies 12" long went at $350-$400/ea. Hate I missed that Charatan. :-)

I agree with the WOW portion. Wonder if the "lucky" buyer will actually smoke it. Be a shame if they didn't. Unless they put a sign up above it, "C'est une pipe."

I guess if you're filthy rich, who cares? You could buy a decent car for that amount!
