All Cigar Discussion>Lighter or matches?
TJtorpedo 05:57 PM 03-25-2012
I'll use whatever is handy at the time, although I do have a favorite soft-flame Xikar lighter.

If I'm using matches, I usually let it burn for a second or two before putting it to the cigar. It might be just me, but I like to wait until the sulfur smell is burned away first.

Great posts guys, it would be nice if some people could say more about taste differences, before I invest in a good torch, getting a good light and burn after going thru about 3 or 4 matches...

You can get the big matches for lighting your grill at the grocery or hardware store usually.

I have smoked several thousand cigars and notice no difference in taste using all methods of lighting. I use a single flame torch as it is most efficient. Much like cigars its all a matter of personal preference. :-)

These run about $2 each delivered if you buy 3. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/compact...t-lighter-4179

If you don't mind something a little bigger these also are cheap and work great. And they seem to run forever on a fill.

Bob is wise. And while I have not smoked nearly the number of cigars he has, I have smoked enough that I notice no difference in taste and use a torch as my preference but will use anything as the need dictates.

I've always read that Bic lighters cause a bad taste?

Matches whenever possible

I have one lighter that the ignition is broken so sometimes I light the flame off a match

I use my torches unless I have to use a soft flame or a match because they're my only option. I have never noticed a taste difference before but the ease of the lighter wins for me.

Nope. The butane used in Bic or other disposable lighters is both colorless and odorless. :-)

Alright, cool. I was told to avoid Bics because of the "harsh smell". I used a Zippo to light my pipe one time and...it tasted terrible. Wasted a bowl of Squadron Leader :-)

Soft flame, torch, match, tinderbox, hot manifold, whatever it takes.

Bob and Peter have the right of it.
