All Cigar Discussion>What sampler to buy?
junkinduck 08:59 AM 02-15-2010
I spent a good part of yesterday looking at samplers. I need some advice on what to buy. I am looking for good variety and quantity for around 100.00. Keep in mind I am new to this. BTW I was shopping CI and fameous.

I would vote CI's "Motherlode" sampler. 30 sticks for $100. It'll give you a lot of stuff to taste while beginning your journey. Also, be sure to look for their free shipping code usually posted in one of the bottom fora here. :-)

Famous has great search options to narrow down your search by strength, shape, wrapper color, etc. so if you're looking to pick up specific strengths or shapes they are a good way to go.

I would also agree with Tony that the CI Motherload samplers (#3-30 sticks and #6-36 sticks) are nice pickups when you just want to try several different strengths and sizes. :-)

If you go with the Motherlode sampler, I'd probably choose #3. However, it has a lot of Ghurkha and Cammacho, which are pricy sticks.

Oh and I also should mention that you can get some great deals on 5 packs and samplers on www.cigarbid.com :-)

If going this route do your homework and know what retail is for what your bidding on. It is very common to see things go for more than what you could have just jumped on CI or any other online retailers site and bought them for outright. A lot of pissing matches go on which often times drives things over retail. :-) Good luck and enjoy the journey.

It would help to know what kind of cigars you like, and how many cigars you expect to get for the $100. Many of the samplers include fairly mild sticks and inexpensive samplers with a lot of cigars often include some odd brands.

I would shop 5-paks on JoeCigar (CI) and Cigar.com and put together my own sampler of things that match my tastes. At least 95% of the time all of them throw in some dogs with a large sampler pack that hurts your real value but raises the MSRP. On most Joecigar Jam days you could put together a very nice package of samplers with 2 or 3 orders of 5 paks or 10 paks and know exactly what you are getting. I have picked up a few very nice samplers from Coronacigar.com, they are first class.:-)

Don Pepin sampler form CI or cbid is very good as well.

Also, you can buy multiple brand sampler for CI.

Another option would be to go into the WTB section of this site and do a "WTB $50 Sampler" and see if you get some offers that suit your needs.

You could go less....($25-$30).....or more($75-$100) in your post, just seeing what offers you get. Try to be fairly specific in what you are looking at.....

In the end, you may end up getting a far better quality/quantity ratio than a purchase from a retail shop....

What have you tried so far? None of what you've tried so far stick out? Any cigars that you didn't like?

I'm new at this also, and find that I really like Maduros, so I'm in the process of finding the best Maduros.

Just ask for an assorted sampler in the wtb section. Mention your new to cigars and if there are some that you think you may like to try. I'm pretty sure you would get a better selection that way.

I haven't found anything I don't like yet but have always relied on someone at the b&m to pick something good. I never really paid much attention to what I smoked. My wife got me a humi for Christmas and I am now attempting to fill it. I have no local b&m or friends to herf with. I am looking at the CI motherlodes now. Might try the b/s/t tonight when I am not on the iPhone.

Check out CI and look for the Gran Habano 20 stick sampler, it's 39.99 and they're amazing.

If you haven't already, check out the Newbie Sampler Trade

I am not sure if you have access to the WTB section yet, but as other mentioned, that may not be a bad idea.

I don't really have anything to trade. I do have access to the b/s/t.
