Accessory Discussion / Reviews>28 Bottle Vinotemp-air circulation?
Razorhog 02:16 PM 02-24-2010
I have a 28 bottle vinotemp that is nowhere near full. I have 3 Oust fans in it - one on the bottom facing up, one in the middle facing up and one on top facing down. Is this enough to circulate the air/humidity or should I rig up a computer case fan? I've got about 3 pounds of heartfelt 65% beads in there, the majority on the bottom but some spread throughout. Thoughts?

Take the faces off the Oust fans and rubber band the battery in place, they work 10x better that way IMO.

But to answer your question more directly, that will suffice.

I have a pound and a half of shilala beads in mine and two oust fans with dead batteries. I stopped worrying about it a long time ago. I cant tell a difference whether they are running or not. The humidity is fairly constant, plus it already has a fan in it.:-)

Forgot to mention that I did take the fronts off. Thanks!

I was just wondering if the humidity had a tendency to "settle" in certain areas. I only have one hygrometer in there. Probably not a big deal, just curious.

3 is good. I have 3 in each of mine, I don't know if they make a real difference, but seeing them in there gives me piece of mind.

1 oust in mine for a year and a half. It goes dead from time to time and the humidity doesn't change at all. But its also completely full of boxes and i think that helps as well.

Yeah, to be honest I doubt the Oust fans do much at all. I mean you have to put them like 3 inches away from your face to feel anything at all. And that's with the front cover off. Better than nothing I suppose.

I just use the fan that is in the unit and have 3 hygrometers in there. They all say the same thing. You may want to look at the seal. Some of them have gaps in the seal around the door. Which is why I am returning one.

I had some heartfelt beads which were completely smelling of ammonia so I took them out a few weeks ago. The humidity hasn't changed at all. No fans other than the stock one either.

I'm getting the feeling that as long as your VT is filled you don't even need beads. Eventually the humidity will drop off but you just need to add something moist to let the boxes absorb the humid air and bring the humidity back up.

The best way to improve those oust fans is to throw them as high as you can in the air and let them smash down on the concrete.:-)

If you are worried about air circulation use a pc fan or just plug your vino in and let the installed fan run.

That is my next project - replacing the cooling unit once it arrives. I hope it fixes it so I can have some temp control for the summer. :-)

I have 3 oust fans in mine and 2 hyros with 2.5 pounds of Shilala Beads. I am not convinced the oust's move enough air to make a hill of beans difference but either way I am very happy. Packed full of Seegars and all cedar ChasDen drawers and shelves it works absolutely perfect. Looking now and the humidity is steady at 67-68 at top and bottom.:-):-):-)

I just have a glass of distilled water in mine. No beads nothing else. The fan circulates just enough to keep the humidity between 64 and 67 constantly for going on two years now.

I use several 28 bottle wine coolers but they aren't Vinotemp (Some British company/thing I don't understand but they do a great job).

Air circulation is well and good, especially when it's empty and there is a lot of air to circulate. But in all honesty you would likely be hard pressed to distinguish a cigar on the bottom shelf from one on the top. Of course if your aging for many years that could influence it, but I suspect no more so than the opening of the door of the cooler to check on them.

I have three in mine as well but the batteries die and go unchanged for months at a time and I have not really noticed any difference RH is always +- 1% I have just about 1.5 lbs of heartfelt 65% split evenly into 3 pantyhose pouches, one on each of my 3 shelves, that seems to even out the humidity as much as the fans IMHO

1. Oust are great in desktop humi, not a Vino

2. Circulation is your friend I have found

3. The more open space you have in a Vino, they more fluctuation you will notice in temp and RH

4. Use a CPU fan, two are preferred but one will do the trick

Good luck!
