All Cigar Discussion>How to convince the wife I need a lounge in the basement
timj219 08:39 PM 02-14-2013
I can't believe this never occurred to me but I just realized something today.
Most of the year when I want a cigar I go outside and have one. But when it's too bad outside to have a cigar (like windy and 5°) I end up reading about cigars and looking at online vendors who sell cigars. Well we all know what that kind of behavior leads to. A few days after my cigar deprivation the next assortment of "must try" cigars arrives at my door and she gives me a funny look.

I do have a point here (I think). If I could always have a cigar no matter the weather, then I would buy less cigars and we could afford better pillow shams or window treatments or whatever it is women like.

What do you think? Does this argument sound plausible?

Working on mine in the basement now. I hope it's finished by the end of March. My wife is 100% on board with it.

Its the wife, you are supposed to TELL her want you are going to do, not ASK! ha ha ha :-)

For my lounge I used two bathroom fans at 100CFM each on separate switches, they work great, but my lounge is on the 1st floor! If you are building into a basement, you would need a room that does not allow any smoke to pass from the basement to the 1st floor through the basement ceiling (and it will happen unless that ceiling is airtight, e.g. no can lights, no ceiling exhaust fans, etc). For a basement I would do two exhaust fans mounted into the wall with a 4" exit through the sill plate. I would also add a HEPA filter that you can leave on when you leave the room.

Whatever you decide, I would suggest not bringing it up today...Valentine's Day! :-)

Tell her it's better than you going to a cigar lounge where there are hot drunk chicks!! I bet she helps you build it!!

Sounds plausible to me... I'll take a ride down there and help you break it in! :-)

Explain to her that if you were inside instead of outside while smoking,
you'd be able to spend more 'quality time' with her, discussing pillow
shams & drapes & whatnot.

Then again, maybe it's better you stay outside & avoid such talk. :-)

I'm using TWO Rabbit airs and a 350 CFM+ Bathroom vent for a 17 x 15 room. I think it should be sufficient.

I don't see why you bothered to ask her opinion, or what the potential problem could be . . . as long as you put a hide-a-bed couch down there.

It is much easier to beg for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission :-)

I myself smoke in the garage, but living in Southern California, my worst temps even in the garage hit 50 degrees, then If I want it warmer, I just plug the electric space heater 15 minutes before I have the morning stick.

As for basement smoking, I wish I still lived in a state ( born and raised in Rochester NY ) with a basement, being in the HVAC business most my life, it be set up with an exhaust fan with fresh air intake for circulation.

It's your house and I assume you pay all or at least half the mortgage; you should be able to do as you wish in your home...

I wish I had a basement. Water table is too high in this area...noone has basements.

Well I'm going to use the "savings" argument as part of my pitch and see how it goes. In the end I think we'll end up compromising and I'll enclose part of the back deck. As far as telling instead of asking or doing what I like because I pay the bills, I realize those suggestions were probably half in jest but I couldn't live with a woman who didn't expect decisions like this to be made cooperatively. And I'd rather smoke outside, give up a few bad weather days or weeks of smoking, if it means coming back in to a happy wife.

Just put one on the top floor, Mac, and call it a basement! Who's to know, or care? :-)

And, you can easily buy an attic fan, but just try going to Lowe's and asking for a basement one. :-)
