I don't get it. You can dial a number and talk to someone and get an immediate answer. WHY TEXT???? and wait for an answer. Maybe I'm just old but I can't get it. Help me.

For me it has a lot to do with work. I work in an industry where anything can happen at anytime and then I have to 100% focus on what's going on. Many times this makes phone calls impossible as I would have to hang up with someone 6 times during the conversation. So for me txt'ing is easier and faster and its something I can do at the same time I'm doing something else.
Its all about multi-tasking for me. In fact right now I'm txt'ing Kayak Rat while writing this and while working

1. You don't need a conversation, you just want to *inform* (get 1 milk too)
2. You know the recipient is not available to talk...church, meeting, driving, sleeping
3. You want to send a mass-message to your phone book (Happy Thanksgiving from Butthead)
4. You want to tell someone that you need to talk, but can't now, could they please call later

I really dislike talking on the phone. Always have--and for no good reason. Now, if I'm on the phone, someone's getting billed for it

Don't mean to threadjack, but nothing...NOTHING is more irratating than some as*hole using a two-way in public. It's bad enough that idiots walk around the store shouting into their phone as if no one else can hear them, but now we have to listen to both sides of the meaningless drivel they call conversation?
Farging iceholes.

actually it's not thread jacking...you make a good point...txt'ing is a bit more discrete publicly then cell phone conversations..Unless of course the message notification constantly goes off.

Dig it also,
I hate that too. That's why I keep mine on vibrate and call back at appropriate time.

I'm not a big talker on the phone either...I would rather do it in person than over the phone..I feel bad sometimes cuz some people don't realize that I'm not being talkative cuz I'm an A$$ but because I prefer face to face or txtmsg.

Believe me my friend if I had the availability to just slow down and be on a beach somewhere with no possible ways of communication, I would be there in a heartbeat. My dream is to one day be financially stable enough to just be a beach bum and enjoy life.
Unfortunately that's NOWHERE on the horizon for me.
:-) So until then, its stay in contact and live life in the fast lane

I follow. Everyone needs to take at least a few weeks a year and turn "it" off. Key West, Spear fishing, Daytona, a cliff in Arizona, or Yosemite National Park. Find time for yourself. You'll get there. Best of luck!!!!

If people would look at these devices as tools and not toys, the usage (and associated costs) would not be an issue.

What? You lost me. A drill is a tool and a phone I can see as a tool, but why would you use a drill to hammer a nail? Ergo - email for text or phone for conversation. It does not bother me that people text, but I wonder why. They can leave a message by voice if nobody picks up. However, if it costs less to text, I'm all for it, but won't do it.
