General Discussion>I need a host for .pdf files, etc.
shilala 10:08 AM 10-14-2011
I used to have server space with my ISP that I used for pics, files, software, .pdf's, .doc's, etc. I don't anymore.
I use photobucket for pics and it's perfect.
I need a host the caliber of Photobucket that would be good for this other stuff. I don't want folks to have to go to a website, sign up, and all that crap to get a file. Just a good, old-fashioned click-save as.

I Googled, and didn't find an option that didn't look cheesy.
Any ideas/suggestions would be awesome. :-)

I've used dropbox.com but that requires a program download. Google docs perhaps?

Have you checked out dropbox, fileupyours, megaupload, and rapidshare?

Doesn't Google Files have an option that you can leave open so people don't have to sign up? Or is that sign up only?

Well for the sharing of photos is easy. There are a lot of sites you can use, but wanting to share files is a whole other issue. Most photo/video sites wont let you share a file.

If you really need to do this I would get domain space. You can create a photo gallery for free on your domain then store files you want to share with people.

Hey Scott, issuu.com is pretty slick.

Here is a sample of an uploaded document:

box.net currently is offerring free lifetime 50 GB accounts, you can send a link to people to share files, and it has an iphone and ipad app as well.

Vic, is there a code for the free 50GB or is it tied to a device purchase or something like that?

All I'm seeing is 5GB free on the personal accounts. 50GB appears to be $19.99.

I looked at that this morning too. The only issue I have with box.net free stuff is files can only be 25mb max. That might be an issue with files..

I have tried and abandoned all but fileupyours in the past, Adam. They just weren't what I was looking for.

Vic, I already have a box.net account. I even had the app on my iphone, I just never used it. I think I downloaded it long ago on my ipad and never got around to checking it out.
I just messed with it and it's perfect. Easy, simple, and direct-enough downloads. It takes you to a box.net page where the public preview the page then download. In order to direct link I'd need to pay a fee.

I logged into box.net on my desktop and still only had 5GB. As soon as I logged in with my iPhone app it upgraded me to 50GB. That'll do me good.
There's a 25mb cap on file size, but that's fine for what I need.
I think I can use it to host pics, I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out. I imagine they grind out a direct url for images, just not files. If I can't host pics it doesn't matter, I love Photobucket with my iphone because I can shoot and upload right from the app. That makes it more useful than box, anyways.

Problem solved. Thanks, Guys!!! :-)

Just log in on your iphone and it upgrades your account to 50GB automatically and gives you a push notification about it. I just did exactly that a couple minutes ago.
It's actually an appstore-specific promotion.

Vic, never mind, I found it. It looks like it's a special deal only for iPhone and iPad users. Oh well.

Do you have a Mobile Me account? You can just drop it into your public folder and people can access it.

No, I don't MobileMe. I looked at it in the past and found no use for it until they offered Find Your Phone. IIRC, it cost money, too. Find Your Phone has moved to icloud now. I'm not sure what will become of mobileme.
Mobileme isn't taking new subscribers and in order to use idisk a guy needs to have mobileme.
I certainly would think with icloud there should be an online portal to manage your stored content, but there isn't. I just checked at icloud.com.
I'm sure they'll add more functionality to the whole icoud thing in the future.
