Wine, Beer, and Spirits>How To Make Mojitos?
awsmith4 03:26 PM 10-09-2010
I want a Mojito. I've had some excellent ones in the past at herfs but don't remember how to make them. Can anyone give me step by step on how to make excellent Mojitos?

Wow thanks

Now I guess I should clarify, what defines a real Mojito? I don't want to pick some random search result and end up with crap. I know I need to muddle mint leaves and I need rum (which I have plenty). I remember cane sugar, I guess I was looking for my friends' here opinions on how to make a good one. I tend to trust the inmates options the best.

That is kinda why I started this thread, I am interested in making Mojitos the proper way, if there is a proper way. I drink beer, whiskey and rum. I rarely have a mixed drink, I most likely could screw up a rum and coke. I have been building an extension on my deck today and wanted a refreshing drink. I have a bottle of Oronoco that I tried but don't really see it a sipping rum and thought I'd make something with it. A link to a trusted recipe would be fine, for the record I know how to ****ing Google

I use Ten Cane Rum and home made simple syrup instead of plain sugar and lime and mint that I grew at home. I've made them at a few of my herfs and they got great reviews.

+1 on the simple syrup, it makes life a lot easier since the sugar is already dissolved. I make the simple syrup by bringing 1 cup of water to boil then stir in 1 cup of sugar and letting it cool. Also, when you muddle the mint leaves don't go crazy or you'll be spitting out little bits of mint the whole time. Just bruise them enough to get the oils out. This is how I typically make them:

Muddle the mint in the bottom of the shaker (muddler)
Add the juice from 1 lime (I use a citrus reamer)
Add 1 oz simple syrup
Add 2 oz white rum (Bacardi)
Fill the shaker with crushed ice
Then fill with soda water (not tonic!)

Pour between two glasses to mix, add more rum to taste :-)

When we were in Vegas earlier this year I had an awesome mojito, I went back to buy another one and watched how he made it, that's where I picked my recipe up from.

Thanks Andrew!

I remember watching Rob make them and then really enjoying them. Then I had one at a restaurant that sucked. I think it was made from a mix.

I will try this tonight!

I just order them at casa fuente when I am in vegas. :-)

Sorry, I know that won't help you make them. :-)

I would also try a caiprinihia if you like mojitos.

I'm going to throw a recipe out there and you might think it sounds like a girly drink, but don't knock it until you've tried it!

Half a dozen mint leaves or so (fresh)
Half a lime cut into two pieces
Half a dozen fresh raspberries
A dash of simple syrup (about 1oz)

Muddle that in the glass

Add ice to top of glass
Shot of rum (about 2oz, I use Bacardi silver)

Shake all that up, pour back into glass, top with club soda

It's redic delcious. My gf loves them, so do I! Also, as you can tell from my recipe I just kind of eyeball everything :-)

If you just want a normal mojito, that recipe works too minus the raspberries, but I highly recommend trying them!

Raspberries in the mojito sound pretty good, I'm going to have to try it soon.

This has been the best by far mojito I have had:

Pay special attention to the part about prosecco or asti spumanti. I prefer the Asti myself. It adds a whole new depth of flavor to it. And don't be afraid to go dirty with it. Dark rums can be just as tasty if not more so than clear/light/silver rums.

I use real sugar, not syrup. And gotta have the bitters.

1/2 lime
6 mint leaves
a pour of fine baking sugar
splash of bitters

smash it all up

ice on top
good pour of montezuma premium rum
top it off with club soda

and then add bitters to taste

This is the recipe I got from the Havana Cafe here in Phoenix.
