Accessory Discussion / Reviews>New Humidor (seasoning in progress)!!!
thecatch83 06:36 AM 02-27-2011
This humidor was a gift, on back order for months, and I am using it for most of my singles. It says 150 count (I will be lucky to get 100-125) and while I'm waiting for my 65% HF beads, cedar trays and second digital hygrometer for my Igloo coolidor project for my long term storage, I thought I would season this and fill all the crazies in on the action.

It's a barrel type, with digital hygrometer mounted in front (which I thought was a nice touch).

As you can notice from the front picture, the left side seal isn't the best and after using the dollar bill test, I could pull the bill out fairly easily. The front and right side were good to go, and I'm getting a nice swoosh sound upon closing. The glass seal looks good to go as well. Although I always clean out the dust etc. inside the humidor upon receiving it, I don't normally wipe down the raw cedar with distilled water but I wanted to troubleshoot the bad seal so I only wiped down the top of the lid where the seal is made.

I filled up two small bowls with DW, replaced the tray and placed my calibrated digital back inside for 24 hours.

I then replaced the two bowls with two Boveda 72% seasoning packets and smaller cup of DW for another 48 hours.

After three days, everything seems to be doing great. RH is rising to a steady 66%, and I was pleasantly surprised to see both my digital hygrometers reading the exact same temperature and RH.

Once I hit close to 72% RH, I will remove the small cup of DW, and wait another 24 hours. If the Boveda packets are holding in the mid 60's I will start to introduce my cigars. I will eventually replace the packets with beads once they arrive this week. As we all know, the seasoning process should not be rushed, and I'm looking at a good 5-7 days start to finish if everything goes according to plan. Stay tuned for pics with cigars!

While it's seasoning, you can put something of weight on the lid to get it straight again as the cedar probably warped a bit when the wood cot really dry. Done that with a alof of boxes with great success.

Wow, I like that. Some day I will get to that point. I am just hoping the wife get me a Humidor from waxing moon to start my journey on heirlooms in the humidor section.

Just a quick update: after a week of seasoning in my closet in 68 degree conditions, I placed my singles inside the humidor and let them sit for a few days and the seal is holding humidification nicely. The digital hygrometer attached to the humidor was reading 69%, but my small adjustable hygro inside was only at 61%. Incidentally, I'm using two Boveda 72% packets until a lbs. of 65% HF beads arrive this week. I pulled the digital out and decided on doing another salt test and sure enough, it only went up to 67% after 24 hours so I set it to 75%. After placing it back inside the humidor on the bottom, it's reading 68% and the attached hygrometer is reading 69% at 70 degrees :-)

Ty, good luck with humidor, I have the same exact one that I got from the devil sight over a year and a half ago. It's a nice humidor, after awile I noticed seal wasn't that tight so I put some tape under lid to help out. Also, pay attention to the built in hygrometer. At first it read fine, now it's about 15% off, it could be time to replace the battery but I just got a new one from waxingmoon so once I fill my new one I'll be stocking others back in this one. What a slippery slope I'm on.:-)

Thanks! Yeah the attached digital hygrometer isn't that great.....as it's reading almost 5% over my digital. The seal is not the greatest, so I seasoned the lip with distilled water and it's holding right at 65% with only two boveda packets!

Very nice setup, I think I had that humidor. I like the cuban press CAO's you have.
