Good Eats>Pot lucks @ work

Anyone else do this? We do it weekly. Someone usually brings in the main dish and other bring in sides or we order out. So far we have done BBQ, Burritos, Chicken & dumplings, stuffed shells, smoked cornish game hens, chili, Raisin' Canes a couple times and I am sure I am missing a few. This week we are doing fajita's. Not bad for a bunch of construction workers!

The companies dont tend to help moral, so we take it upon ourselves to be treated like humans once in awhile! We also work swing shift so we dont normally get to be with our families often for a good meal.

though we don't schedule a "pot luck," i'm assigned to a high school and there is always an abundant array of food that is brought in!!

We have done this at work for years. Mostly just before Christmas. In years past, it was done more frequently. It's a good way to try a cross-cultural mix of foods.

I always did that in the Plant I managed,,,once a month I'd have a BBQ and would bring in 2 inch Rib Eyes with all of the fixings,,,beans, corn on the cob, french bread and salad. It was my way of saying thanks for keeping the jobsite safe for everyone and we held a safe working environment for all employees in our Division for 3 years running. It's a small thing to let the working people know they are appreciated. What it cost in terms of groceries saved the company thousands of dollars and the morale went thru the roof as everyone couldn't wait til the end of the month for this huge steak dinner.

We used to do this every month to celebrate birthdays. It was great at first and everyone put a lot of effort into what they brought, but as time went on and people had less free time, it ended up turning into a fast-food-fest.

With all the Indians I work with a bowl of Dal and Roti's would be all that's needed. Maybe some lime pickle too...

Once a quarter we used to do that at my last Navy command. The section I worked at was all guys so the food was outstanding, no fu-fu food like salads, quiche, etc. Venison stew, filet mingons, steaks, cornbread, chilis, baked potatoes, etc. Stuff that sticks to the stomaches. where I work now is mostly women and it's lean cuisine out of a microwave..... They look good, but no real food where i work.

We used to all the time, birthdays, holidays, just because days.... Over the last year-year and a half the moral tanked and the few we did have ended up with a table full of store bought chips and cookies since no one wanted to take the time to make anything special. I hope moral turns back around soon, but so far it looks like another tough year in the office with the screws being tightened.

My favorite were the breakfast days. Fresh blueberry pancakes on the griddle, homemade coffe cakes, gravey and biscuites. YUM!

Back when I worked swing shift at a warehouse we would do this pretty regularly on the weekends. Now that I'm in an office 9-5 M-F, not so much...

At the firehouse it's usually a throwdown for breakfast. Leftovevers baked with eggs and potatoes......................:-)
Other meals are usally planned better, everone encouraged to contribute.

Todays menu: Boss bringing a venison gumbo and rice, Im bringing a shrimp etouffee and a simple peach and cherry cobbler. Another is bringing bread, someone is bringing drinks and another is bringing salad and who knows what else will show up!

We did pot lucks every week at my old job, and at Christmas people brought in food every day for a week. They were never over the top, but there was always plenty of food to go around. I am glad I left that place, because I was gaining weight like nobodys business.:-) Now I am at a new job with no pot lucks and back to the Gym.:-)

I work at a library cooperative, and we always celebrate birthdays each month, sometimes with pot-luck; other times we send out for chinese or mexican food.

Plus, we always seem to have something going on each month to celebrate some holiday... next up is Mardi Gras....

Unfortunately, we can't have a grill on our property (management co. rulz) so potlucks are normally stuff that is cooked at home and brought in to the office in crockpots - although last year we celebrated opening day of Baseball season with Ball Pak Franks cooked on a George Foreman grill. :-)
