Island (The other ones) Reviews>Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic Robusto

Cigar: Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic 1979 Robusto (5 x 50)

Cost: $74.56 for a box of 20 off of Cigar International's "Make Me An Offer"

Drink: Coca-Cola Classic (the best cola out there)

Appearance: 2 banded cigar that says "Don Pepin Garcia" with a dark background on the top band and a second band that says "Cuban Classic" with a black background. This has a dark brown wrapper on the cigar.

Pre-light: Smells like wood.

Taste of the cigar: This cigar has a peppery and leather taste to it. The pepper is very strong at the beginning and it gets weaker as the cigar is smoked.

Construction: Held a nice ash. I ash my cigar after about 1.5 inches on every cigar I smoke. The draw was perfect, not too loose, and not too tight. The cigar required a few touchups.

Strength: This was full flavored, but didn't knock me on my butt, and I smoked this in the morning.

Summary: I loved this cigar. I am glad I bought a box. I think these will be a mainstay in my humidor. I would definitely recommend this cigar to others. I give it a 9.5/10

If you like the robusto then you must try the Perla. :-)

review from a few months ago:

This was my first Don Pepin Garcia ever, a gift from my cigarbuddy Smokey, and he told me that I would love this cigar. He was right. The 1979 is a robusto size cigar, 127 mm long with a 50 ring made out of Nicaraguan tobacco with a dark corojo ’99 wrapper. The aroma is deep dark manure and the wrapper looks great, silky smooth with hardly any veins. The predraw is fine, with some fruity flavors, which I have never tasted in a cigar before.

The first flavor are wood with some wild summer fruit on the background. The fruit flavors become stronger while the wood disappears. There is a slight hint of chocolate noticeable which slowly grows in strength. Approximately halfway the cigar the fruit flavor disappears and some nutty flavors surface soon to be followed by some white pepper.

This cigar produces lots and lots of smoke and strong straight ashes. I do realize that this review makes the cigar sound a little weird, fruity & nutty, but it’s the best way to describe the flavors.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, I want some boxes of this cigar.

My first purchased box was this a couple weeks ago (noob). Still have yet to burn one though. This weekend we have a date!

I had one from my box when I was playing 9 holes with the boy. Wasn't the greatest experience I've had with this cigar, but still, wasn't that bad for the links!

Nice work on the review. I wish I could feel the love you guys have for these, but I just don't like them. The DPG Blue's -- love 'em -- but the Cuban Classics I find to be neither Cuban (tasting) nor Classic. Buth then again, I don't like blueberry pie either, so go figure.

I don't find them tasting like a Cuban either, but they are just good.

This is the only cigar in the line I don't care for. Like you mentioned, it starts out nice and spicy then after a third it goes away and I can't taste anything after that. It's the only Black Label I experience this with.

9.5 out of 10 isn't far fetched for this smoke.Very good imo.

I've had the Perla & the Robusto sizes ... neither do it for me. But that's not to say they're not a decent cigar. Just not for me.

That is one of the things I love about this hobby/obsession. Every one has different tastes. I know the Perla is really the only one I love from this line.
I like the others but this small one really stands out for me. :-)
