Wine, Beer, and Spirits>Favorite Bottom/Middle Shelf Liquors?
thechrisdotcom 03:17 PM 09-08-2011
Browsing some of the threads here and there's a lot of nice high end/top shelf stuff being posted.

Anyone like the middle or bottom shelf stuff? Either by itself or mixed with something?

I don't drink a whole lot of hard liquor, but if I do, it's usually Crown and Coke.

What about everyone else? Any lower end stuff you guys enjoy? Bacardi? Smirnoff? Captains? Sky? etc?

Well I am not sure if it is Bottom Shelf, but I really enjoy myself some Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum. 90 Proof goodness.

I changed the title. We'll go with bottom/middle shelf.

I would agree with this. I like Sailor Jerry and will even go cheaper and snag some Admiral Nelsons every once in a while.

Jim Beam, for when I'm in the mood for a mixed drink.

For the pricepoint, it's damn hard to beat Svedka vodka. I can buy a homewrecker at my local liquor store for under $20, and it'll last for at least a couple weeks between the GF and I.

For middle shelf vodka, I like Belvedere and Tito's. Never drank any top shelf vodka. Tried Ultimat, and I thought it sucked. But, that's just my opinion. Mediocre spirits in a fancy bottle. And Paul Mitchell owns it (same owner as Patron :yuck: )

New Amsterdam gin is dirt cheap and okay for mixing.

I've been known to buy Evan Williams bourbon on occasion.

For rum: Appleton Estate. V/X or Reserve. At my local liquor store they run 19.99 and 24.99, respectively.

I like JW Red when making a Godfather. New Amsterdam gin as mentioned, makes a mean G&T. There are some really good bourbons and ryes that don't break the bank, too. Elijah Craig, Evan Williams SB, to name two bourbons and Rittenhouse Rye 100 for rye. I can drink those three neat.

I used to drink a fair amount of Chivas Regal, before I discovered the delights inherent in single malts. Were I still in the habit of haunting bars, I might on occasion choose Chivas and water.

Smirnoff has won several blind taste contests against vodkas costing twice as much, and would likely be my choice for mixed drinks - if I'm paying for it. that is. :-)

When I'm not drinking beer, I drink Crown, Bacardi White, and Smirnoff (with mixed drinks). Crown Black straight! :-)

A simple of Jack and Coke is my mid-shelf choice. If it's a particularly hot day, I'll throw equal parts of mid-bottom shelf vodka (usually Smirnoff), frozen lemonade, and ice into the blender and make a delicious smoothie. Those are some of my favorites...
