Accessory Discussion / Reviews>Humidor Recommendation
Col. Kurtz 08:26 AM 05-31-2009
Ok, I have permission (or as close as it gets) from SWMBO to dispense with the coolerdor, the 50ct and the 100 ct and consolidate all my smokes in one place. If I had to guess I have about 350 or so sticks, some of which I want to hold onto and some I'm going to dispense with quickly.

So what do you guys recommend for a new guy wanting to consolidate? I'm thinking a 1k to 1500 capacity would be more than enough. Or is that a slippery slope also? I really like the looks of the Montegue that Al got bombed with.

Any special considerations? Glass doors vs. wood doors? Any one easier to maintain RH than the other?

Or should I just go with a vino for RH and Temp control?

TIA

I vote veno. If you look sometimes you can find a used one for $100-150. Then spend ~$100 for trays and $60 for beads and call it a day. I will say the only bad thing about going from 350 sticks to something that holds 600+ only makes you want to buy and buy more smoke :-)

Good question. I'm in NC, also, and considered converting my vino (being used for WINE -- go figure) to a humidor. But, my temps at home have never gotten up to the point where it has been a concern. The "Daddy Den" is in the basement, so I stay cool just about all year.

I like the look of that Montegue, too. Big, functional, but does not stand out in a room as just a humidor. It's an end table, with a magical, special purpose. Glass would only be needed if you were putting your sticks on display, IMHO.

I have a Montegue in order should get it next Tuesday can't wait to get it.
If you go that route shop well, the prices varies a lot. PM me if you wish me to send you the shopping I already did that will save you that time.
Since I am Canadian I was not able to use Cbid but I know some guys here got nice deals from it.
As for the Vino, I think it would be the best approach but for me I needed furniture like Humidor since I also like wine pretty much and I already have a wine cellar.:-)

Hey Col.

I've got the Lexington from Tampa Humidor with a Cigar Oasis II XL, works great, no humidity problems at all. I think the Montegue might be a little bigger......always go bigger.

I don't have any experience with the VT's but I just like the looks of a traditional wooden humidor.

I would suggest getting in touch with Bob Staebell from Aristocrat Humidors. I recently received my new humidor form Bob and his skilled staff. My only complaint is that I didn’t go bigger. When you figure out the size you want order the next size up. Top notch customer service, shipping everything is first rate.

You definately want to get something in the 1500+ range or else you will have this same problem in the not so distant future. If you are a 5 cigar a day smoker, the 1500ct humidor should keep you in check on room. But if you are more of a cigar collector you may want to get a Tower style humidor that holds 3000+

I just caught the Montegue fever that is sweeping this forum. Its actually a lot bigger than I envisioned. It shoud keep me my stock quite well. If you go this route get it from cigarbid, you will save anywhere from $100-200 versus other places that sell it.

Jerry, for my 50th B-Day gift last year, my wife Beth gave me the Sentinel cabinet which is a super humi and I love it. I picked up the Oasis II XL from Atlantic Cigar for $179.00 which included shipping. Works great and the humi holds my cigars with room to boot....... :-)

Go with the Montegue, it's a really quite nice for the price. I put a Oasis II XL, and it keeps my sticks very fresh. It has a large drawer for singles and I took the shelves out and I put approx. 55-60 boxes/cabs in there. Another option is a bigger 60 or 100 bottle wine cellar. I have a 60 bottle version with 5 pull out cedar shelves.....I keep her at 65 degrees and put 4 lbs of 65 % beads and she stays right at 65/65.... I keep my bigger boxes in there(cabs of 50) and took 2 shelves out to stack her up....

Thanks for all the advice so far gents. Do any of the larger units offer any type of temperature control? If not, Vino is how I'm probably going.

Well Vino and a few others make stand alone thermoelectric coolers. So given a big enough humidor you could easily add humidification and cooling.

You know, if you're looking to get rid of those smaller humis, I would love to take them off your hands. I am looking for a small desktop one.
