General Discussion>Emergency Veterinarian's - Damn!?!

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad they keep the lights on at wee hours of the night - but damn - $500 big ones for some stitches??

Somehow the side gate got left open so my boys decided to take a trip down the street. TJ came right back, no problem. The stupid beagle (term of endearment) didn't come back until almost midnight. He came back to the back gate (wooded area) - let him in and he kinda staggered around and then flopped down. That's when we saw this 4" long gash down to the muscle and tendons on his rear leg.
Two hours later after he is checked over, given a local and a handful of stitches we get the bill - damn.

Compared to two months ago when TJ had surgery done at the regular vets - full blown put under, cyst removed and all - $350 bucks.

Again - I am so glad they are there - and Rusty will be fine, no muscle damage - but you know - damn.

Vent over -

That sounds about right... I had to bring my terrier mix in last summer after a dog fight one night. They wanted a $300.00 deposit just to examine him. I had no choice, so I paid it. Then they wanted almost $1500.00 to complete the job. Granted, it was a bad fight and he had severe lacerations -- over 100 stitches -- but $1500?? Cripes. I had them stabilize him over night and took him to my regular vet in the morning who stitched him up for $400. Nightmare. He's okay now, working off his medical bills by digging holes in the back yard and staying out of trouble.

My German Shepherd -- who I'm convinced is one of the most stupid dogs on the planet (lovable though) -- decided to eat an entire bottle of aspirin one day. Luckily I arrived home less than an hour after he had eaten them. But about 5 minutes after the vet closed. Hurried him down to the Emergency Vet. They induced him to vomit eberything back up. When they'd gotten everything out, and counted the pills, he appeared to have eaten about 10x the lethal dose.

Anyway, the induced vomiting, the medicine to settle his stomach afterwards, plus observation overnight was a bit over $1000.

But he's a good dog, and my daughter's best friend and protector. So it was worth it.

Sorry to hear about the bill. My bull terrier ate a rubber chew toe...the toy clogged up her insides so she had to have surgery. Total cost about 600 dollars.

Yeah - he is okay - just hobbling around. He ate something yesterday so that's a good sign.

That's not the problem - having the drugs and antibiotics is.

And TJ's was for emergency cyst removal. By the time we saw it - it was getting ready to pop.

Ya, ironically...

If you came in with similar conditions to yourselves, I would have been only able to bill about $100-$200 Canadian to patch you up....and that would have been to the provincial health plan, not to you.

Vets get away with murderous billing schemes, dentists too!!!

Buggers

Cheers

Yep - and they know that. Bandit, a German Spitz who lived to be 23 years old got mauled by three large dogs. After months of upteen surgeries and a gazillion stitches and staples his total vet bills was over seven thousand. Whatever it took we would have paid.

And actually - I got the stupid beagle Rusty to be a hearing ear dog for Bandit as he went deaf. Training didn't take that long and worked out well.
