I looked back to june of last year and didn't see a thread.
So post up your favorite covers, songs that in your opinion are better than the original.
I have to start with the no brainer, Hurt as performed by Johnny Cash. After hearing Johnny's version Trent Reznor said he was in awe and that Johnny Cash made this song his own.

Second I will have to go with Always on My Mind as performed by the Pet Shop Boys.

Johnny Cash does a lot of amazing covers, a couple of my personal faves are "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and "Personal Jesus".
Though not a big country fan, I do love Wille Nelson's takes on many old standards..."Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is the first to come to mind.
My all-time
least favorite cover, which many people seem to love, is Metallica's version of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page"....just brutal.

100% agree on this. The worst part is so many younger people have never heard Seger sing it so they think it's a Metallica song... gag.
I admit here and now I never realized that was an Otis Redding song. See learn something new every day. Thanks for posting it Thomas.

Agreed. It's sad that something, once heard, can never be unheard.

Thanks for learning something, Adam, and I mean that sincerely. Some people are incapable of that.

Cash's version of Hurt is heartbreaking and the best cover of all time.

Johnny did a great rusty cage.
Foo fighters and Brian may do a nice pink Floyd have a cigar.
Neither better than original IMO
Priest diamonds and rust however IMO is better than Joan's

I have to agree with some of the other posters. I think Hurt is one of the definitive covers and in a rare case it surpassed the original in quality. I love a good cover song Band of Gold by the Afghan Whigs is really cool cause an out there Alternative band does a great cover of a disco song.
