Wine, Beer, and Spirits>Ice Molds

Hey everyone,
I'm a big fan of whiskeys (and recently rums) but I do tend to like them on ice fairly often. Recently I got a set of ice sphere molds (http://www.amazon.com/Tovolo-Sphere-...dp/B007ACTN54/) And I really love them! They melt so much slower, and they look pretty damn cool. I can usually get through two glasses of whatever I'm drinking well before the whole sphere is melted.

For $10 I highly suggest giving them a shot.

I have these too and they work great. I also use them for things like Gin & Tonic during the summer time. Two of them also make a great ice tea in a big cup.

They will be getting lots of use this summer! Gin and tonics are my go to when it's warm out.

I've just put a set in with hot water, to see if I can get clear ice. I don't think it makes any difference other than looking really cool.

I keep forgetting about these. Now I'll have to give them a try!

For clearer ice, try distilled water. I have an RO system, and had the guys run a line to my fridge in addition to the one to my sink faucet. Crystal clear ice from my freezer now.

I use filtered water, and spheres as well in my whisky. My wife has TWICE given me molds for gifts, yes I love them, yes we both use them, but both times she failed to get me the coveted "Death Star" ice molds I so want!

There could be nothing cooler (well nerdier) than a little Death Star keeping my single malt cool.

I bet it would really make that single malt, out of this world.

I'm not proud of that joke, but I felt it needed to be said.

I really enjoy the ice molds. They are great to chill my bourbon, but don't melt away and water it down as much.

I have those same molds. I use distilled water and they still aren't really that clear. I do like them a lot but I'm thinking about getting one of these or one of these.

$85??? $120???

I use this. $7.95 and it makes six 2" cubes.

Clarity has more to do with the water than the vessel.

^^My thoughts exactly. I'm fine with my cheapo sphere molds, I'd rather spend the extra on some nice scotch to go with them :-)

Actually, I believe clarity has more to do with how things are frozen then the water itself. Minerals can have some effect, but not that large of one.

I only said I was thinking about it :-) Ive been happy with my cheapo ice molds but they are far from perfect. They are usually cracked and not at all clear and end up splitting in half by the time I finish one drink.
