Discussion>My First Couple Refurbishes

Hey Guys,

I'm a relative newbie to pipes, but early on I have been interested in refurbishing/restoring estate pipes. Here are a couple of pipes that I bought on fleabay with the intention of restoring.

The first one is a Kaywoodie Drinkless from the late 1920's. This was my very first restoration. The bowl, rim, and stem were a complete mess. I cleaned, sanitized, and polished. I also removed some heavy toothmarks from the stem prior to polishing. It took me some time, but came out nicely.

The second pipe is a Family Era Sasieni Post-War to Pre-1979. The bowl, rim, and stem were not as bad on this one, but still took a little time to do. I also removed some minor toothmarks from the stem prior to polishing.

I do not have a buffer, so everything was done by hand. Here are a few before/after pics.

Thanks for looking!

Nicely done I hope to be able to come close to your results on a couple of pipes I am working on.

Good job, they look great. I really like the Sasieni.
I put a 6 inch cotton wheel on a home made mandrel and chucked it up in my drill press, really makes the job easy.

Thanks, guys!

That's a good idea, Jeff! I'm sure it makes the job much easier.

Nice job there. I've restored a few pipes myself. I think before I take on anymore I will buy a buffing wheel though...:-)

Thanks Paul & Frank!

A buffing wheel would certainly help alot. I thought about buying one, but I kinda like doing it by hand. I know...crazy. :-)

Great looking pipes. Would you mind passing on what you did to refurbish the stems?
