Redneck, been there done that.

2 years ago we had an ice storm, power was off for 8 days and nights.

I had an APC UPS that was a 12 volt system. I took the small battery out and made jumpers to connect it to my pickup.
Extension cord into the house to power the dsl modem and laptop. We watched a netflix movie before bed each night.

Oil lamps, propane stove and an open face heater. I was the favorite uncle for a few days. =)
