General Discussion>Great big giant wine vending machine.
shilala 08:21 AM 11-16-2010
I guess this is something new in Pennsylvania, something to get around our liquor laws. I saw this monstrosity at the Giant grocery store here in Washington, Pa.
While I was there, I also saw that they have a "cafe" that's actually a six-pack store.
See, we don't have wine or beer or anything like that in grocery stores. You can get beer at bars and six-pack stores and beer distributors, but the only place you can get wine or liquor are at the State Stores. They used to all be owned by the state, hence the name. Now they've privatized and they're all called "Wine and Spirits" stores.
I have no idea how this thing works, but it's only turned on from 9 am to 9 pm. It appears you have to pass a breathalyzer test. I'm guessing you use your driver's license and someone mans the machine.
If anyone knows how these things work, clue me in, will ya?
Oh, on top of it's already incredible gnarliness, it has 3 big flatscreens on top of it.
Bear with me while I post the pics, I'm using my phone...

How many beads would you need to turn that into a Wineador?

That's actually pretty genius...I've always found it silly that we can buy beer and wine here in Texas at our grocery stores (in counties that aren't dry) but we can't buy liqour. When I went on a ski trip to Colorado and we went to get groceries, low and behold the grocery stores had a liqour aisle! Not only was it convienent, but they were also pretty good prices.

Also, liqour store required closing times of 9:00 and on Sunday are really frustrating sometimes too.

Blue laws just don't make sense in some states.

Turning it into a wineador might prove hassling when you have to show them your ID and take a breathalyser test just to get a smoke :-)

We can't even get wine or beer at our grocery stores here in MN, and the liquor stores are closed Sundays, too. At least I'm not too far from Wisconsin if I REALLY need to go buy booze on a Sunday. :-)

And I keeping hearing America is the freest country…

PA is so puritanical. Buying liquor in PA is not far off from buying liquor Dubai.

Yeah, I'm used to going to liquor stores. The Walmart liquor store is very convenient, and awesome prices. And I'm used to running to the liquor store on Saturday if I need something on Sunday :-)
