General Discussion>Project of the Day : Cigar Box Turned Little Humi
shilala 10:18 PM 12-10-2008
This was a quickie I did today when I was working on some other stuff.
It only took a half hour or so. I did it because it's a super-cool box and it'll make a nice little gift.
All I did was remove the original hinges, add new hinges, cleaned off old price stickers that were all over it, added a catch, and laid in a gasket. Then I made a robusto sized beadstick, stuffed a few cigars in there, picked out a good bombee, and stuck it in the mail.
It'll make a neat little rough desktop humi. It's cute.

The fit on the box was atrocious. The lid had big gaps on each side.
The closed cell gasket material I use is perfect for taking up gaps and it worked very well. The box ended up perfectly airtight. :-)

That's enough blah. Take a look and see what you think.
I think it's a pretty cool little humi for the money, even if it is a bit crooked and gappy. :-)

Nice work! I've often thought about crafting one, but lack the necessary skills. Your box looks "elegantly efficient" :-) and the cigar bomb looks :-)

Scott, it's bombs like that that are priceless. Anyone can buy and ship an item (not t those aren;'t heart felt), but when time and love go into a gift - that can't be replaced. I like my Aunt's Christmas gifts the most, home made blackberry jelly because I know what it takes to make it. Super nice bomb!

I hope this came out like I ment.... I suck at words.

That's sweet Scott!

Tell me more about "closed cell gasket material." I'm having a bear of a time this winter holding the humidity my desk top humi. I'm wondering if foam will help it seal better.

I get it at Lowe's, Warren.
It's gray. It comes in different widths but few thicknesses.
The cells are closed and they're so small you can't really tell they're there. It's kinda like the memory foam beds. That sort of material.
It will compress, take form, then return to it's original shape slowly.
It's absolutely perfect for humidor seals because it forms itself to irregular gaps and even fills dips and dents and holes.
If you feel the different weatherstripping foams, you'll know what I mean.
It comes in a red brick/brown color, too.
