Island (The other ones) Reviews>J&R AlternativetoPADRON 1964 Anniversary Diplomat
Lenny 05:07 PM 04-15-2009
These Alternatives are Just Beyond Great. I know what I like A full Bodied Peppery tasting Cigar. But I was trying to watch my spending.
After talking with a J&R sales rep. on the phone I said I'll bite.
Well let me tell you The J&R Alternative to Padron 1964 Anniversary "Diplomatico" is a cigar beyond expectations.
It's EMS. 7 X 50 Good Construction of Nicaraguan Tobacco in a Pearjo Shape. It's Full Bodied with Heavy flavor of pepper from start to finish. The ash is good for about 1- 1 1/4". The smoke is :-):-):-):-)Volumes Gray & white, with hints of blue.
A Bundle of 20 is only $31.95 A nice price.
It's a Square Pressed Cigar.
If you like Full Body, Pepper on the heavy side It's a Must try.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I am.
Keep on Smoking,
Lenny Waller

Never heard of JR cigars? Owned by Altadis? ring any bells?

They have a bunch of stores all over the U.S and a pretty decent website. They make their own JR Alternative cigars. The Alternatives are knock offs of the real cigars.

Your review makes this stick sound just like all of the Cuban Alts. I wonder if it's the same blend as all of the Cuban Alt brands.
Thanks for the review.

JR is one of the biggest online cigar retailers and if youve never ordered from them you probably wouldnt know that they have thier own "alternative" line of premium cigars.

They have thier own versions of premium cigars for about half the cost. Some are terrible, some are very decent.

I could have been a little nicer about how I said it. No malice intended brother
.
If you have one in your area it's a good place. I visit the local JR weekly and their service is great. Decent selection and great prices.

Nice review I certainly hope they are better than the TNT Cigars Alternative to the Padron Anniversary....Because they blew :-)

someone should start a thread about all the JR alts and how they suck or why do you hate on them or do you like them or something like that...

:-)

or don't and say we did:-)

Lenny, glad you like them specially at that price. If you ever want to part with a 5er (of those) shoot me a line, I would send $$ first and get my feet wet at the same time.

I never noticed anything peppery about a Padron Anniversary....

maybe alternative means opposite?

:-) This threw me when I first read the thread, but I figured, "Maybe I'm smoking them wrong?" I do get a nice spice, but definitely don't find them to be peppery.

That said, I wondered about these alternates when I saw them last week at the JR in Selma. Didn't wonder enough to buy them, but I did wonder. :-)

JR in Selma sucks. I went their last week, they had absolutely no prices up (probably due to SCHIP), no one would take the time to help me out, they acted like they didn't want my business, so I left. The JR in Statesville has always been great to me though.

Thank you for the review on this particular Alternative. Its been since the late 1999 through 2000 when I last purchased and smoked some Alternatives. It was a bundle of the Bolivar Belicoso's, Cohiba Robusto's, and the RyJ Bully's that were purchased for around $18.00 a bundle at that period in time. It was the Cohiba's and RyJ's that I enjoyed. A long time has past since then and am not sure what the quality may be at now.

Main thing is, that "you" enjoyed them and that's what really counts now isn't it?:-)

Of interest, I've seen some of the JR Alts and Cuban Counterfeits in some B&M's out this way in the past too:-)

Given the choice, I would take JR Burlington.

But, I will say this, once you've been to Selma a few times, you'll know the staff - and they are a hilarious bunch of guys who are very down to earth.

Statesville was the first time I met ANYONE at a JR's that was so stuck up it wasn't funny...yeah.....in Statesville....go figure....

Andy - Next time you go to Selma gimme a call - I'm only 54 miles down the road!!! (exit 41)

I'll remember that the next time I go to a Mudcats game. Have to get off at the Selma exit to get to the stadium.
