General Discussion>Anyone have a Netbook?
BeerAdvocate 06:14 AM 07-22-2009
I am in serious need of a laptop computer so I am thinking about getting a Netbook. I dont play computer games or do any serious work stuff on my computer so it would strictly be used for surfing the net and downloading pics and music. If you have a Netbook, what are your thoughts about them and do you like yours?

I have a Lenovo S10. I also bought one for my wife. We love them.

A student here has one of the other models that gets an honest 7+ hours battery life with hers, but it weighs north of 3 pounds. The S10 has a weak battery (2 hours or so) but it weighs 2.4 pounds. I bought an extended battery on eboy that gives me an honest 4.5 hours.

I also bought the S10-2 recently, it has three USB ports which is better than the S10, but gave up a couple of things that I like. I also picked up a Dell D420 for just over $200 on ebouy ... dual core so it runs much faster than the Atom chips and is still around 3 pounds. With a choice between used D420 or new S10, I'd take the Dell to be honest. The only neg that I have with the D420 is the 1.8" drive. Other than that it's pretty much a perfect small computer. I like it better than the Lenovo X61S that I had not long ago.

You can't beat the convenience of having a computer that weighs 3 pounds or less.

I am pretty interested in the Toshiba NB205. Same size as other netbooks, but gets 9hrs of runtime on a 6 cell battery.

We like our acer one. It sits in the living room for whenever we are sitting around watching tv and what not. Makes it easy when you're watching a movie or something and you go "hey, where have I seen the guy before". Pop it open and lookup imdb real quick.

Not much better if all you need a is a web surfer/email reader. My dad puts all of his reloading stuff on his and then takes it to the range so he can take notes on certain reloads. Very convenient for travel!

ASUS EEEpc. One of the top rated Netbooks out there and it works great. Make sure whatever you're looking at has an Atom processor not a Celeron and if it has a solid state hard drive, make sure you're comfortable with it's size.

I have an Asus 1000HE and love it! It has a great battery as well as a decent keyboard. Check out NewEgg for great pricing on this and most Netbooks... :-)

I have (am typing this on) a EEE 1000HE. This is my internet machine. If I want to use any office application I go to the notebook. The 1000HE is great because of the chiclet keyboard. The battery life is huge. I get 7 hrs under normal use. They claim 9.5 but that is under low power test conditions. I turn my notebook on only when needing to write a paper. The netbook is on almost continuously. I love the thing and will upgrading them all the time (I can justify the cost as my usage of this is massive). So yeah, get one.

My 1000HE actually runs Office 2007 pretty good (it might also have to do with the fact that I upgraded the RAM to 2GB)... :-)

Yeah, I have 2 GB too, never even booted with 1GB. I work with large data files, big graphics and large word documents wiht plenty of embedded odds and ends. I find that open office is enough for typing quick letters and keeping track of expenses on the road, etc, etc. For serious office work, this is not a replacement IMHO, but that does not change the fact that when not using my work issued laptop, this gets 90% of the usage at home vs. my laptop and 100% usage when not inside (on the patio smoking, travelling, etc is 100% netbook).

I also use an Asus 1000he and love it. That said I wouldn't want it to be my only computer. Battery Life is great and It's great to surf the web, Email and other basic tasks but before you get one try and spend some time trying it out.

Wow a lot of us 1000HE's on here. Do you guys have desktops or other laptops too or just the netbook? I got the netbook because I built a custom desktop and just needed something small and light to carry around and surf the web on.

I have a 17inch and a 14 inch laptop as well. The least used is the 17inch, 14 inch gets used for work all the time, netbook dominantes home use.

I have a Dell OptiPlex desktop and two Dell D610 laptops as well... The netbook is just great to keep with you and use as you need it. :-)

Also, the fact that I could get an InvisibleShield also helped in my selection of the 1000HE.

I have had an Acer Aspire 1 A150 for probably almost a year. After I picked up the high cap battery I was happy with it. I use mine on the couch when I'm watching tv or at a cigar shop with their wifi.

If you get one with the intentions of using it for basic stuff you will be happy.
