I started out just puckering up like a fish and taping the outside of my cheek with my finger instead of trying to blow smoke rings..now I blow smoke rings when it's not windy.. :-)

I do it loads. Try blowing a large ring and then a smaller one to go through it immediately after it. With a bit of practice you can change the speed that they float away from you so you can make the first one go small and the second one go faster through the middle of it. The first time I did it I felt I deserved a medal of some sort :-)

IMO, the gist of the trick (which no one's mentioned yet) is in perfecting a controlled little air-puff from the back of your throat. You have to kind of foreshorten it, if you get my drift- the vascular equivalent of a glottal stop, perhaps.

So, pretend you're a cockney who's lost his voice. :-)
