Well since we now have the famous Troop Room I thought I would start out the first new thread here. I would like this thread to be about Posts/ Duty stations. I would like for it to be a place to take about assignments weather you were stationed there or not. Maybe you visited the post/camp/base. I would like for it to give feedback not about the unit you were in but about the area and what there was to do around there. Maybe after a little while it could be a place to look for when thinking of a new duty station to try for. Thanks for everyones help, together I am sure we get a large list up and running.

I will start it off.
Fort Irwin
http://www.irwin.army.mil/channels
I have been stationed there twice last left in 06. The post is small. Not much to do on post itself. Hopefully if you go there you have a good car. If you get stationed there you want to get housing. If you have kids they have a elem. and a middle school on post. High schoolers has to ride the bus/drive to town. Not that the housing was great but they were building alot when I left plus they had alot of new houses up already. The post is like 40 miles to town. Barstow isn't much either. Barstow has a Walmart and a couple of bars and a couple of resturants and a drive in movie. The one good thing about the post if you like riding dirt bikes or dune buggies you are surrounded by lots of desert to get out and have fun. You are almost in the middle of San Diego and Las Vegas, about 3 hours from either. Tons of stuff within an hour to hour and a half drive. Victorville/Hesperia has a mall and shopping.

I'd like to see this place take off.. The only thing I got is Ft. Eustis... Great area definitely a retirement base. 45 minutes from VA Beach and in the middle of Shopping everywhere. You have the historic James river and Jamestown, the first settlement in the US. It combines things to do and see in Norfolk like concerts, shows and sports with the traditions of the revolutionary times..

I've been all over the place now in my short army career.
I will lump Forts Gordon, Benning, and Stewart all together and just say that I hate GA. Stewart has been the best of the bunch. I like 3ID for the most part. I just really really hate GA so I can't get over it.
I was over in Darmstadt Germany for a little while. That was awesome. I think that Kaserne is closed now. I know the signal brigade that was there has been disbanded. Darmstadt was great cause it had a little Irish Pub that I loved. Germany was just an awesome place to be overall.
I've traveled to a lot of other posts for short periods. Irwin, Lee, Sill, Lewis, and Drum are the ones I remember. I'm really looking forward to getting back to Lee for a while. It was a nice small post and a fairly relaxed climate. The surrounding areas were pretty nice too. Richmond has a great Bills Backers Bar that JK and I went to a few times. Definitely going to find that place again.

In my short 7 weeks in the Air Force, I've been to Lackland in San Antonio Texas, and I'm now just getting started at Keesler in Biloxi Mississippi. Don't know where my first permanent duty station is yet, but I'll fill you guys back in once I find out.

Heading to Ramstein AB, Germany for my first duty station. Looking forward to it, hopefully I'll be able to see a bit of Europe while I'm over there. I head that way in February or March.

Lucky you. Visited Germany but it would be great to be stationed there. I hope you get to see everything you want to, it's a great opportunity.

NF AB is a reserve base about two feet long. Definitely doesn't count. Although it has better security than Ft. Stewart.
Germany is an awesome duty assignment. Have fun while you're over there.

Fine, then.
But NFAB is a good place to go to if you want to visit the falls. They have nice accomodations at military rates. Same with FT Hampton if you visit NYC. If you stay at FT Hampton, you don't have to worry about where your car is parked, either. So some of these small bases are good places for vacation sites!

I was prior Navy, 90-94, so I won't go into the Naval Base deal. Army-wise, Ft Hood, which I do not like, seeing as I am from Texas, and I think the area sucks horribly. There is alot of stuff to do pretty close, but the area is pretty undesirable.
Ft Polk is where I am stationed now, and my family and I actually like it alot. Seems strange, but we are used to the small-town atmosphere, and the hunting and fishing is exceptional. Again, things within an hour like Lake Charles, Alexandria, Shreveport is about an hour and a half. I have been there 3 years, and will stay until they make me PCS somewhere.

I'll make a trip that way at least once. Guaranteed. I plan on doing a bit of travelling while I'm there. I'll let you know when I'll be able to head that way and we'll set something up.
