This has to be broken down to genre. To say the greatest in any one genre is totally different than any other. So for the hard rockers out there:

Johnny James Dio
Geoff Tate
Robert Plant

and probably about 2000 more that I can't think of. Did someone mention James Hetfield? He sings and e note and every song they have is in e minor. Blah

You stole my thunder on that one. For pure vocals he was the first to come to my mind.

How can you have a list of great male vocalists and not include Tom "The Voice" Jones?

Or Sammy Davis Jr?

Or Big Joe Turner?

Or Captain Beefheart?

Or Tom Waits?

I'm not really much into gospel but colelctively, The Blind Boys of Alabama also belong (gotta go back a few years though, they had one or two members die in the last few years)

Also Cee-Lo Green when he's not rapping, is like Marvin Gaye, just an octave or so higher.

And of course William Hung.

Oh, and add Sting to the list (as much disdain as I have for him these days, I must admit he is a very good vocalist, and unlike many, he actually can sing)

Well, if I had't have pointed it out, we would have ended up with "77. Ronnie James Davis, Jr."

One of the things about Sting is that some shows, it just sounds like he just doesn't give a crap - others, he really tries. Runs real hot and cold.
