We have POP machines. We go to the store to buy POP.

Coke and Pepsi are COLAs. Cola is a type of POP.

SODA is a tasteless/colourless fizzy liquid that some people mix with their scotch. I drink SODA with a slice of lime.

I remember when I was 12 I met someone from Texas and they told me about how all soft drinks were referred to as "coke." "What kind of Coke do you want?" God what a stupid concept.

Soda :-)

We have soda fountains that dispense flavored sodas.

Bottles of soda say "XXXXXX flavored soda"

The vending machines you refer to are listed under "soda machines", not "pop machines" on vendors websites. :-)

Grew up in a "pop" area. Still call it pop most of the time, but if I'm ordering a fountain drink, it's called just that. Fountain drink, or large drink, or something with drink in it when at fast food.

Escalator Kleenex.

Oh, sorry... uh.. I'm supposed to say "pop" and do. When I ask for a Coke, and they say "Is Pepsi alright?" I do one of two things.
Look disgusted and ask for the other alternatives.
Ask them why they would carry such an inferior product.. :-) I've never heard anyone order a Rum and Pepsi before. There must be a damn good reason. :-)

Not that I am a Cuba Libre` drinker on a normal basis, but it's the thought that counts.

With a cigar, I do prefer Coke Zero at the moment.
or, uh... other beverages...

"Diet." Covers everything.

Sorry to threadjack, but this reminds me of a story. Growing up in Europe I was unfamiliar with many of the expressions used in the USA. I asked a gal out on a date in college- to see a movie- and she happened to reach the box office before me- whereupon she turned around and asked; "Are we going Dutch?" Not having a clue what she meant, but wanting to be agreeable, I smiled; "Yes!" OOOPS!

An executive was being moved from NYC to Cincinnati. The moving company was from Cincinnati. As they were unpacking, the exec's wife said: "Careful with those lamps, they are antiques!" The movers, not hearing her well due to the wrapping paper used the typical polite Cincinnati expression for "what?" asked: "Please?"

"OK- PLEASE be careful with those lamps, they are antiques!"

Soda here. My ex used to call laundry soap "washing powders", she was from Indiana and also called soda "pop".
