A friend of mine has 3 of those little guys and I can not imagine them letting a fox get that close, ever.

Actually, I don't think so. From Yahoo news:
Snapshots - This weekly collection includes eye-catching images from around the world....
In an unusual role reversal, a fox was spotted trailing a beagle in a forest near Montreal, Canada. The odd fox behavior was an effort to protect four newborn fox cubs nearby. The photographer noted that the fox outwitted the dog and saved the family. “It was the first time in my life when I saw foxes so brave, who managed to fight back in front of a hunting dog.” (Photo: Mircea Costina / Caters News )]

Yeah, it might be real. The focus looked screwy though. The top of the dog's tail seems to be going out of focus while the fox's nose looks sharp. It may be that the tail was moving fast.

Focal planes look ok to me.
:-)
Fox has the right amount of sharpness/blur compared to the ground below, although I could do that in a chop as well, just means if it is, its a good one.
The after-the-fact addition of the edge blur ringing the photo enhances the pic, but also makes it harder to see whats really going on.
