All Cigar Discussion>Cutter or Punch?
milhouse 02:22 PM 10-09-2013
i prefer cut most of the time.

this reminds me, I really got to send my palio back for exchange. it feels like crap lately, almost a jerky feeling when you open or close it.:-)

Cutter. Have a punch, just never used. Need too try it out, but why fix something that is working just fine.

I use my cutter most of the time, but for some cigars I like to use a punch. If I know the cigar is going to have a really easy draw then I like to use the punch cut.

Used a punch on a sublimes sized cigar tonight, worked well for the size.

I use a cutter 98 percent of the time mostly because it's always handy.

Personal preference for me is a (double) guillotine. Tried punching, it seems to have its' place for some sticks for me, but I've always got a xikar in my pocket and use a Palio at home or at get-togethers.

Hey, 1st forum post.

99.9% of the time it's a cut. I've never had good luck with punch cuts. Either the draw is too stiff, the cap starts to come off or the tar build up becomes too much.

I tried a punch once but prefer a straight cut.

I prefer a cut, but some cigars I prefer punched. It depends on size and how tightly packed the filler is. I always keep my bullet shaped punch and a cigar cutter on my keychain so I am ready for anything. You never know when a smoking friend is going to pull out a special cigar for you to try. You have to be prepared. Does that make me a Boy Scout of cigar smoking?

I like the Palio, too. I keep one of those great looking Burlwood editions in my pocket.

I punched everything when I first started, now it's a cutter for me. Less tar build up is always a plus.

I dont use any cutter. I prefer to use my finger nail. My cigars have great caps so I just peel off a round layer without removing any tobacco. A cutter gives the cigar too easy of a draw for me.

I completely agree. I have a Palio I use for shaped cigar's, everything else is punch cut.

I LOVE my V-Cutter! Use it almost exclusively now.

I just bought a v cutter the other day and have used it a couple of times since. So far I like it. Kind of the best of both worlds between punch and a straight cut.

I've tried several cutters, including some factory-style "tuck" cutters. When I can't be at home to use such, I go with a straight cut with my Palio.

Switched to using a punch where it's possible. Prevents damaging the cap. Occasionally, had the cap come off in small strips even with a very thin sharp cut. Haven't had any issues with the punch. :-)

I use a punch for large gauge sticks, all others get cut.
