All Cigar Discussion>What is it?

It is interesting to see the varied tastes of the respondents. But there is some consitent mutual agreement that the companionship during the smoke is a greater factor than the smoke itself.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

I think the many herfs I've attended taught me this lesson. Cigar smokers, more specifically CA inmates, are a different breed. I will fill out my form per your questions later, I just wanted to throw this out there.

To some extent, I'd agree. There are some cigar smokers out there who are just puffing their White Owls, El Productos, and Backwoods. Their cigar smoking is almost a vice. Then there are those who enjoy a fine cigar, like the folks here - some of those who do so are not on this board. But, they too would fit in that category.

Of course, there are some who enjoy a fine cigar, and when doing so fit in this category. But, there are other times when that same individual is only looking for their nic fix, at which point, a tooty-fruity Swisher is as good as an Opus X, or a dip of Coppenhagen.

1) What is it... that I am most looking for when I sit down to smoke a cigar?
-- A time to relax and enjoy the company of a good friend who also enjoys a cigar. Hopefully, on Monday, to celebrate a Packer victory.

2) What is it... that will most likely change my cigar choice/desired taste at any given time to select a cigar?
-- Is this a special event? If so, a special cigar. And even then, what I am eating and/or drinking will play a big roll as well.

3) What is it... that appeals to me most in my top 5 favorite cigars? (and maybe you list them and specify what it is in each that makes them most appealing)
-- Spice, sweetness, a complexity that might evolve or change, and a consistency from one smoke to the next. I like being able to grab a particular cigar and know that it is going to be what I expect it to be, what it was before. I don't like grabbing a stick and it has changed so much that it is unrecognizable from the last one. When I grab a Don Jerabek Principe that I purchased in 2010, it should at least be fairly similar to the same smoke I bought in 1999.

4) What is it... that most influences me to try a new cigar/marca?
-- Shilala liked it. OK, maybe not just Scott, but I know those people on CA and in other places who have a similar taste in cigars as do I. When they suggest something new, it probably is something I'll like. Scott has cost me a lot of money, the bastage.

5) What is it... that makes my "go to cigar," the one I reach for when I don't want to seriously contemplate what I am getting from a particular cigar?
-- Consistency. I know what I am going to get.

6) What is it... that makes your "special occasion cigar" so special?
-- Who I am with or maybe who I got the cigar from. Sometimes, it might be a special cigar (price tag, HTF, or some such), but even that special cigar will not be smoked until I'm with the right people.

7) What is it... that keeps "those" cigars out of my humidor, and even more so, out of my mouth?
-- It didn't really "wow" me. I've had lots of cigars over the years. There are some really nice cigars out there that I won't smoke anymore. They are good, but they aren't anything special. I need a cigar that gives me something that I don't find as well done in any other. It might be something I find even in a $2.00 stick.

8) What is it... that you'd like to comment on in regard to this thread which reflects my preluding ponderings, but isn't reflected in the questions.
-- I had to revisit this thread and see if anything I write now is different from what I wrote before.

Hey, if nothing else, I just bumped this back to the top and someone who didn't read it before might be reading it again and will now respond.

If you read this far in this particular post, I am impressed.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

I'm new to the scene, on the forum, and to cigars. i was introduced by my coworker 3 months ago. ive smoked a lot of cigars and only liked 2 of them. problem is that i pay $13 per stick. (LFD factory press III & Camacho triple maduro) i finally understand that i like complexity and full flavor. The similarities i like is pepper, coffee/chocolate, earthy/woody, and leather. all in the same cigar. ill try anything once. but since i only smoke 5 a week. i want a cigar that is going to fill the front of my mouth with rainbows and not by throat with harsh coals. if you have any suggestions on a complex full flavored cigar thats inexpensive. let me know....because after this thread...i realized im not ecclectic.
Great Post Im saving this to read again over as i graduate into a veteran cigar afficionado.

I'm bumping and old thread. As I read through this, I found I'd answered it twice. Hmmm, different moods, different days, different answers???

I could answer them again today, and some of my answers might differ again. Maybe I should do that.

A little over 2 years ago I started this thread. I revisited it once to see if any of my answers have changed, they did. Some of it has changed again, some remains the same. I will keep those items that changed a touch in this post.

Also, I am curious to see how some of the newer guys in the Asylum will answer.

5) What is it... that makes my "go to cigar," the one I reach for when I don't want to seriously contemplate what I am getting from a particular cigar?
-- Consistency. I know what I am going to get. Amazing how true this still is. I grab certain cigars because I know what I will get. What is even more interesting is that lately, my "go to cigar" has become my "go to smoke." When I really don't want to seriously contemplate what I am getting from a smoke, I am picking up my pipe more.

I have a couple I want to smoke with my son as a PPP. I have some really nice smokes, but then there are a couple just average smokes which are seriously consistent, and which I have loved for a long time. I am curious to see/hear his thoughts on them. He had a My Uzi Weighs A Ton Baitfish last night after archery league, he really liked it. Before he smoked it, I had thought it might be a little too strong for him. It wasn't.
