General Discussion>How fast do you drive
Ashcan Bill 03:30 PM 10-07-2010
Well, the factory sets the speed limiter to kick in at 141 mph..... :-)

I generally drive 5-10 over with a radar detector on the dash.

As far as top end, I've only goosed it up over 120 once, and that wasn't really intentional. :-)

:-) I know the feeling. When on the bike I find it tough to keep it less than 20 over. The other morning I blasted away from a light and had to stop at the next light only to realize a LEO was in the lane next to me. Very surprised he didn't pull me over as I deserved to be since I got on it way to hard but sometimes she just begs me to beat on her. Lately I have been really contemplating getting rid of it because I know it's just a matter of time before I really get bagged for either speeding or wreckless and the speeding ticket I will probably get will probably fall under the wreckless category anyway.

Tough to answer with so many factors that come into play.
what I'm driving,my pickup or Buick-
what time it is-
where I am-

As a general rule,if the conditions permit; I will be honking down the road.
Keep in mind,I have had a CDL since I was 18.I am 52 now.
You might say I have a mile or two on the clock...

I try to drive safe for the conditions. On the freeway I usually try to keep 12-14 over the limit to avoid the big >15 miles over ticket. On sides streets and whatever it just really depends.

Around here we have some weird situations of big 3-4 lane one way roads that are technically "residential" and posted at 25 mph even though they are the major traffic arteries through the city. Those I'll sometimes be in the 40-50 mph range (and have people passing me) depending on conditions.

Strangely I feel the people rigidly at or below the speed limit are more dangerous than people driving fast because they become obstacles by not keeping up with the pace of traffic. The worst is slow people cruising in passing lanes. If you ever drive somewhere like the autobahn where the rigorously enforce lane discipline you can tell that distraction and carelessness are much more dangerous than speed by itself. Of course combined is just a recipe for tragedy.

I've gotten too many speeding tickets and figured out that they are not worth it anymore. I guess I'm getting old. That and I've lost about 5 or 6 friends/schoolmates from auto accidents. I drive for a living and see how the fools drive, and I don't want to be a dead fool.
I used to be wide-ass open all the time. I even had a sticker on the back window that said "drive it like you stole it". I got rid of it, slowed down, and got a sticker that says "don't laugh... your daughter might be in here"

My GF says I drive like an old lady. I've been driving twelve years and have had ONE moving violation that entire time.

Depends where I'm at and what I'm driving.

If I'm on the motorcycle:
5-10mph over on surface streets
10-15mph over on the freeways

If I'm in the car:
5 over on surface streets
10 over on the freeways

Highways 8-10 over. Local two lane roads I do the speed limit to 5 over.

In Norfolk you just go with the flow of traffic, which is usually 15+ over the speed limit or a dead stop

I agree. Lately I've been seeing a lot of people on my way home from work who go no more than 10 under the limit (4 lane divided highway), and always right alongside someone else in the right lane. Nobody in front of them for a good 1/4 mile or more, and a big cluster of people behind them trying to get around them. I can tell that many times these people are doing that intentionally because they tend to speed way up and block you in when you try to get around them.:-)

On the interstate highways if traffic allows I am going 80 in the 65 zones. Usually with heavy traffic on my normal routes, the flow of traffic is around 72-75.

I drive almost exclusively in Ohio, so its 65 everywhere. City streets I drive the speed limit.

On the highways 1-5 over or with the flow of traffic, residential it's the speed limit But on the water it's a fast as the boat will go of course except in no wake zones(way to heavy of a fine:-))

I tend to drive 5-10mph over the speed limit. But I usually just set the cruise control at 5 on the interstate. If I'm driving around town I just do the speed limit, plus I live 2 min away from one of the larger county police stations... The roads I travel to and from work and usually well stocked with Transit and State Police. Also, there are two speed camera set-ups on the same route...Tickets are said to be handed out to drivers going over 12mph over the posted limit. The kicker is they are in work zones so the fines double. Most of the interstate here is under heavy construction...
