Another consideration when selecting a pipe is thickness between the tobacco chamber and the outer surface of the bowl. Choice of tobacco and how you smoke will determine how hot the pipe gets.
When I took to smoking, it was advised to let a pipe rest when it feels hot to your cheek. This will help prevent burnout.

This is my experience. The conventional wisdom is correct by me if you consider it this way. Flakes I elect to fold and squash/screw into a pipe fit better, fill better and smoke more evenly (better) in a bowl with tall/narrow geometry.
