This excuse has been said over and over which angers me because why punch a hole in the earth at that depth and start letting oil flow out of said hole knowing good and well that if a leak happens at those depths you have no fool proof plan to rectify the problem? Yeah, yeah the blow out switch or whatever it's called failed but wasn't it this switch that failed back in the 70s which this incident was basically a repeat of albeit on a larger scale? If they knew than that the switch is not the end all be all why continue to drill at those depths if you know good and well you will have a uncontrollable disaster on your hands should a leak arise with no solution to fix it? That's right because of greed.
This isn't an attack on you M19 but the whole situation pisses me off. Right down to the nonchalant attitude of BP, our government and the American public in general about the situation. Just proves that we have become so self absorbed as a society that something of this magnitude goes on for months with little to no outcry from the public that it's just downright pathetic. What's even more pathetic is that Lebron was able to overshadow the disaster because what team he will be playing for next year will really impact out lives.

My understanding is that recent environmental regs forced new drilling off of the continental shelf (a more practical and experienced depth), which is why they were drilling at such an extreme depth. And drilling for oil is what they do, for better or worse.
Can't speak of anything that happened in the '70s, because I don't know about it.
