Hows the Shield feel and shoot as compared to the M&P 9 and M&P 9- compact?

Not my first gun, but my first 1911. My first was a Daisy BB gun when I was 5 or so.

I really liked it a lot.
I haven't shot the 9 compact, but I shot the M&P Standard and Pro. I love the size and weight of the shield.

What's the little metal thing in the strap under the trigger guard?

Correct it's the ranger-T that I took out of the chamber to take the picture.
