I am looking at purchasing this rifle: H&R .44 Mag

We bought land in Indiana and they have dumb hunting laws requiring certain calibers. 44 Mag is one of the approved calibers. What do you think of this gun for deer/turkey hunting?

Can't you get a .30-30 for deer and a 12 ga. for turkey?

I just looked online at Indiana's laws and it looks like I can't use a rifle for a turkey. Guess I'll have to buy a slug barrel for my Remington 870 12ga:
"Legal Equipment:
Turkeys can be hunted only with:
• A 10-, 12-, 16- or 20-gauge shotgun loaded with pellets of size No. 4, 5, 6, 7 or 7½.
• A muzzleloading shotgun not smaller than 20-gauge and not larger than 10-gauge, loaded with pellets of size No. 4, 5, 6, 7 or 7½. Combination loads using shot sizes other than these are illegal.
• Bow and arrow
• A crossbow"

Here is the info for deer:
"Rifles with cartridges that fire a bullet
of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches are legal to use only during the deer firearm season. Some cartridges legal for deer hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40 Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express, and .500 S&W"

I don't believe a .30-.30 would be allowed. Am I right?

That info is weird. They say "rifle" and then list a bunch of handgun cartridges while omitting a lot of rifle rounds that would fit their definition.
Maybe that section is only for rifles that shoot handgun loads.
Edit: Or maybe that's all they want you to shoot with. Not many large caliber rifle round cases less than 1 5/8" long.

Indiana is a "no rifle" state meaning the only rifles you can use are ones that shoot handgun rounds, which is why they list all those. If I was you, I would use a 12 guage and take both slugs for deer and heavyshot (or similar) for turkey.

I don't see the sport in shooting Turkeys with a rifle.

You can't shoot turkeys with a rifle in IN. You have to use a shotgun.

Correct. As Ryan said, no rifle state meaning they don't want people's rifle rounds travelling into populated areas. The lower half of Michigan's lower penninsula is the same way; Shotgun slugs and pistol only for firearm deer season. The northern LP and UP are both rifle friendly, but from what I hear (and have seen) there are less deer up there compared to down here lately.
